Mediaweek editor-in-chief Michael Burgi is leaving the magazine after more than 17 years to take a position as vice president of communications at Canoe Ventures.
Burgi started at Mediaweek as a senior editor covering the cable TV industry and worked his way through the ranks. He is expected to be succeeded by Jim Cooper, currently executive editor of Mediaweek, who’s been there 12 years.
Mediaweek was one of several Nielsen Co. magazines that were acquired by e5 Global Media LLC in January, along with Adweek, Brandweek, Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite all the changes afoot at e5, Burgi told TheWrap that is is leaving on his own, stating, "it was just time for a change. I wasn’t fired."
Richard Beckman, the former Conde Nast executive, was brought in to run the financially-struggling magazines, and has been making changes on both the advertising and editorial sides over the past few months. Most recentlyhe hired Janice Min, former US Weekly editor-in-chief, as editorial director of The Hollywood Reporter. Min has said that Reporter editor Elizabeth Guider will stay on in that post.
Canoe is a consortium of major cable operators whose goal is to create shared processes and standards for audience targeting, interactivity and measurement in multiplatform advertising across U.S. cable systems. Based in New York City, Canoe is headed by its CEO David Verklin, former CEO of media agency Carat North America.
