Madonna would like it known: She does not take the stage wasted.

The singer took to Instagram to clear up speculation that she might have been under the influence during a recent bizarre performance.

In a post on Instagram, the “Like a Virgin” singer insisted she was only acting.

“Thanks for supporting me,” Madonna wrote in a caption to a lengthy post written in her defense by another Instagram user. “Too bad people don’t know the art of acting and playing a character. I could never do any of my shows high or drunk.”

Madonna, who’s currently engaged in a high-profile child-custody battle with ex-husband Guy Ritchie, went on to blame the mistaken perception on sexism.

“And yes underlying all of this is sexism and mysongony [sic] which proves that not only do we not get equal pay but we are still treated like heretics if we step out of line and think outside the box!” the singer asserted. “Sexism is alive and kicking but i am #livingforlove.”

Media reports suggested that the singer might have been intoxicated during her recent performance in Melbourne after she was seen drinking from a flask onstage and saying, “Someone please fuck me.”
