Mary Steenburgen has signed on to join Will Forte and friends in new Fox comedy “The Last Man on Earth.”

While the former “Saturday Night Live” and “Macgruber” star announced the casting at Saturday’s Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, Forte would not reveal Steenburgen’s role.

As previously announced, also co-starring in the somewhat secretive Fox comedy are January Jones, Kristen Schaal, Mel Rodriguez and Cleopatra Coleman.

Jones will play “strong independent spirit” Melissa, who combines her warmth and strength with a “no-nonsense attitude.” Rodriguez plays optimist Todd, while Coleman and Schaal will play Erica and Carol, respectively.

Steenburgen is getting around and diversifying roles these days. Last year she was cast on the upcoming third season of Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black.”

On the Fox series, Forte’s character wakes up to find himself as — you guessed it — the last man on Earth. Clearly, however, there are now women — and at least one other man — that viewers will be spending time with. Some at least will appear in flashback or dream form.

Forte’s post-apocalyptic sitcom debuts on Sunday, March 1 at 9 p.m. The following Sunday, the half-hour comedy will settle into the show’s normal 9:30 p.m. timeslot.

“The Last Man on Earth” is executive produced by Forte, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“The Lego Movie”), as well as Seth Cohen.
