Michael Mann Doing Combat Photographer Doc Series for HBO

”Luck“ co-executive producer collaborating with David Frankham

Director Michael Mann, co-executive producer of HBO's horseracing drama "Luck," will collaborate with documentary and commercial director David Frankham on "Witness," a new HBO documentary series that will follow young combat photographers, the network announced Tuesday.

The series will follow photographers into conflict zones in Mexico, Brazil, Uganda and Libya, documenting their struggles to, well, document others' struggles. (There are no plans as of yet for a show documenting the film crews' struggles to document the struggles to document the struggles. But it sounds like their jobs will be quite dangerous, too.)

"Witness" will show audiences "why, when everyone else seeks cover, the war photographer stands," HBO said.

"David Frankham and I share an admiration for combat photography that captures the universal — and sometimes the indescribable — in a single frame in the midst of chaos and danger,” said Mann, whose films include "Heat" and "The Insider."

Frankham said "Witness" will not provide historical content, but will rather "immerse the audience via intimacy with the photographer into the intensity of a situation as it’s developing, as they risk their lives to capture one piece of the truth.”

The first episode of "Witness" was shot in Juarez, Mexico, and the next three are in production.
