NBC has given a pilot order to an untitled family comedy from “Fresh Off the Boat” writer Kourtney Kang.
Based on Kang’s life, the untitled comedy will explore what it’s like to grow up as the only girl in the only mixed race family in the suburbs of Philadelphia, dealing with real-world issues like race and gender while never losing focus of her life goal of becoming a Laker Girl like her idol, Paula Abdul.
“Fresh Off the Boat” creator Nahnatchka Khan will serve as executive producer on the project alongside Kang and Mandy Summers. Fred Savage will also executive produce and direct the pilot.
The project hails from 20th Century Fox and Khan’s Fierce Baby Productions, which signed a pod deal with the studio last year.
The announcement follows the network’s decision to order the pilot “For God and Country” from “Homeland” executive producer and Keshet Media Group CEO Avi Nir.
The series from Universal Television and Keshet Studios will explore the complex world of our military heroes who make personal sacrifices while executing the most challenging and dangerous missions behind enemy lines.
On Wednesday, NBC announced they would also be reviving the sitcom classic “Will & Grace” for a 10-episode run that will air later this year. The entire main cast-Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally-will return.
