Angelina Jolie is back in action mode in two new teaser trailers for Marvel’s highly anticipated new film “Eternals.”
Directed and co-written by Chloé Zhao — who won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for “Nomadland” back in April — “Eternals” tells the story of a group of 10 nearly immortal beings who have been living secretly on Earth for 7,000 years. Called the Eternals, this group was created by beings known as Celestials in order to battle evil entities known as Deviants. But once the Deviants were vanquished, the Eternals were ordered not to intervene and instead to allow humanity to progress on its own – which explains why they were nowhere to be found when Thanos snapped half the universe’s population out of existence.
But now the Deviants are back, and so are the Eternals. Jolie plays Thena, an elite warrior Eternal who can conjure a weapon out of thin air. She’s seen in these trailers using her spear to impale hideous creatures and also nab an orange from her kitchen – she contains multitudes.
As revealed by Zhao in a new interview with Fandango, the Eternals are divided into two groups – five of them are fighters and five of them are “thinkers,” with the two groups protecting humans in different ways. Jolie’s character is a fighter, while a character like Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos is a “thinker” with expertise in technology and weapons.
