‘New Girl’: Dermot Mulroney Returns to Shame Jess Into a Fake Engagement (Exclusive Video)

Who’s ready to see “Fancyman” Russell listen to a painfully pretend proposal story?

Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel), your nose is growing.

The seventh and final season of “New Girl” begins Tuesday with a premiere that picks up approximately three years after last year’s finale, and sees Jess and the gang having progressed significantly in their respective lives. Well, most of them have.

In the preview clip above from the Fox comedy’s season-opener, exclusive to TheWrap, Jess runs into her ex Russell aka “Fancyman” (Dermot Mulroney) at a birthday party for Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece’s (Hannah Simone) daughter Ruth (Rhiannon and Danielle Rockoff).

The two start chatting about how she’s left the world of teaching, and how maybe she should go work for him (she still has no idea what he does for a living, by the way). However, Jess gets embarrassed when her relationship with Nick (Jake Johnson) comes up. The couple — finally dating successfully for the past three years — have just returned from a European book tour for Nick’s best-seller, “The Pepperwood Chronicles.”

But Russell is shocked they haven’t made it to the altar yet — let alone gotten engaged. Wait, maybe they have and Jess was just confused there for a second. Oh, yeah, this will go well.

The seventh and final season premiere of “New Girl” airs Tuesday at 9:30/8:30 c on Fox.
