‘Orange is the New Black’s’ Lea DeLaria Recalls Confrontation With Subway Homophobe (Video)

“My ears went up when he said women should be subservient to men,” the actress says on “The View”

Actress and comedian Lea DeLaria was more than happy to discuss what really went down between her and a Bible-touting preacher on a New York City subway when she visited “The View” on Wednesday.

As TheWrap previously reported, the “Orange is the New Black” star stood up and shot down the man trying to warn passengers about religious morality.

“I was literally on my way to film ‘Orange is the New Black,’” DeLaria said, “and this guy started preaching. And again, this happens all the time, but he was spewing such hatred and sexism and homophobia.”

Their confrontation was captured on video, which has since gone viral online.

“My ears went up when he said how women should be subservient to men, how we should wear dresses and look feminine,” DeLaria said. “Then he started on that the problem with America was homos and that was it. I just stood right up.”

“I’m so proud of you, Leah,” Rosie O’Donnell said. “You were out, loud and proud before anybody else. You’ve paved the way.”

Co-host Nicolle Wallace also praised DeLaria for her bravery.

“I saw this and was like, this is the international message against bullying,” Wallace said. “You don’t let a day pass, you don’t let a minute pass, you get right back in the bully’s face.”

DeLaria, 56, has been performing stand up for close to 30 years. She mentioned on Wednesday morning that she and Whoopi Goldberg once shared a dressing room together in 1982.

“My whole career has been, ‘don’t judge a butch by its cover.’” DeLaria said.
