Ratings: ABC’s ‘Black-ish’ Scores Strong Premiere With ‘Modern Family’ Lead-in

CBS wins the demo, NBC tops total viewers

ABC may have another big comedy hit on its hands: “Black-ish” earned a strong 3.3 rating in the key 18-49 demographic following a “Modern Family” lead-in (3.7). That said, the now-defunct “Super Fun Night” opened in the timeslot to a close-enough 3.2 rating last year.

For Wednesday primetime, CBS topped the demo overall, while NBC was first in total viewers.

CBS was first in ratings with a 2.6 rating/8 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in viewers with an average of 8.3 million, according to preliminary numbers. The “Survivor” premiere at 8 p.m. earned a 2.7/9 and 9.6 million viewers. The “Big Brother” finale at 9:30 received a 2.6/8 and 7 million viewer.

ABC was second in ratings with a 2.4/8 and third in viewers with 7.9 million. “The Middle” season premiere at 8 got a 2.1/8 — marking its debut low — and 7.4 million viewers. “The Goldbergs” at 8:30 returned to a 2.3/8 — a 26 percent dip from last year’s series debut — and 7 million viewers. The season premiere of “Modern Family” at 9 scored a 3.7/11 and 10.9 million viewers, which were both highs on the night. “Black-ish” at 9:30 earned a 3.3/10 and 10.8 million viewers. “Nashville” at 10 came back to a 1.5/5 — its premiere low — and 5.6 million viewers.

NBC was third in ratings with a 1.9/6 and first in viewers with 9.5 million. At 8, the time period premiere of “Mysteries of Laura” got a 1.5/5 — a 25 percent dip from last week’s preview — and 9.9 million viewers. The season premiere of “Law & Order: SVU” at 9 received a 2.1/6 — down 22 percent from last year — and 10.1 million viewers. The season opener of “Chicago PD” at 10 had a 1.9/6 and 8.5 million viewers.

Fox was fourth in ratings with a 1.2/4 and in viewers with 3.5 million. “Hell’s Kitchen” at 8 had a 1.3/5 and 3.7 million viewers. “Red Band Society” at 9 got a 1.0/3 — down 23 percent from last week’s debut — and 3.4 million viewers.

Univision was fifth in ratings with a 1.1/4 and in total viewers with 3 million.

Telemundo was sixth in ratings with a 0.7/2 and in total viewers with 1.6 million.

The CW was seventh in ratings with a 0.5/1 and in total viewers with 1.4 million. At 8, “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” got a 0.5/2 and 1.5 million viewers. A rerun followed.
