Rep. Anthony Weiner plans to resign today, the New York Times reports, citing a top Democratic official and two people told of Mr. Weiner’s plans.
Weiner, whose lewd online exchanges with several women have dominated news reports and late-night routines since the first picture of his crotch emerged, called Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Steve Israel Wednesday night to inform them of his plans, the paper said.
His resignation was expected at 2 p.m. ET.
The Democratic New York congressman tried to ride out the scandal, which began when he tweeted the crotch-shot to a woman in Washington. He owned up to sending the shot last week, after initially suggesting his Twitter account had been hacked.
But pressure mounted as more details emerged, including that he coached a porn star on how to lie about their exchanges and took shots of himself in a congressional gym. Police also investigated his Facebook exchanges with a 17-year-old girl, though they appear to have been non-sexual and Weiner has said he did not exchange lewd message with minors.
The pressure culminated in President Obama saying this week that he would resign if he were in Weiner's place.
The Times said Weiner decided to resign after long talks with his wife, State Department official Huma Abedin, who returned home Tuesday from traveling abroad with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
