The reunion that 1990s romantic comedy fans have been waiting for is finally coming. Tom Hanks will be appearing in a small role in Meg Ryan‘s directorial debut, “Ithaca.”
Ryan is also starring in the film based on William Saroyan’s novel “The Human Comedy.” Set in the midst of World War II in California’s San Joaquin Valley, “Ithaca” will follow the Macauley family, a mother, daughter and three sons, in particular 14-year-old Homer as he’s tasked with taking care of the family after his older brother is sent off to the front. Ryan will play the widowed mother, while Hanks is lining up a cameo as the children’s late father.

Sam Shepard, Melanie Griffith and Ryan’s son Jack Quaid also star in the film, while Erik Jendresen wrote the script.
Hanks and Ryan previously starred in “Joe vs the Volcano,” “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail” together, and had already been set to work again here, with Hanks as an executive producer to Ryan’s director/star role. Hanks next reunites with Steven Spielberg for his untitled Cold War thriller.
