Friday Box Office: ‘Hunger Games’ Edges Out ‘American Reunion’ with $12.9M

The fourth “American Pie” film is on pace to collect $25 million over the holiday weekend, but “Hunger Games” will take the top spot

Defiling baked goods and maritime disasters are no match for Katniss Everdeen.

"The Hunger Games" is poised to hold on to its box office crown for yet another week despite fierce challenges from "American Reunion" and the 3D re-release of "Titanic."

The hit adaptation of Suzanne Collins' best-selling young adult novel racked up $12.9 million on Friday in 4,137 locations.  It should collect $33 million over the holiday weekend and its overall domestic gross should pass the $300 million mark, according to studio tracking.

"American Reunion" had a solid Friday showing, although it was unable to attract enough fans of the gross-out franchise to topple "The Hunger Games" from its throne. The fourth film in the "American Pie" series earned $9.2 million on Friday in 3,192 locations. It is on track to make over $22 million over the three-day period.

As for "Titanic," the 3D re-release will fall short of some box office prognosticators most ambitious predictions of an opening weekend in the $30 million range, but it still showed that there is an audience for a 15-year-old film that clocks in at over 3 hours.

The Oscar winner made $7.1 million on Friday and should sell nearly $17 million worth of tickets over the weekend in 2,674 locations.

Hold-overs "Wrath of the Titans" and "Mirror, Mirror" grossed $5.4 million and $4.6 million respectively. The sequel to 2010's "Clash of the Titans" is projected to gross over $15 million this weekend while Relativity Media's Snow White fable should take in $12.5 million.

In the milestone department, Sony's comedy "21 Jump Street" crossed the $100 million threshold domestically on Friday. Its total now stands at $103 million after grossing $3.6 million in 3,009 locations.  The Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum comedy should add $10 million to its total over the weekend.
