‘Scream’ Showrunner Discusses Killer Finale Twist, Teases Season 2

“We were all blown away when we got to that dock to film the final scene,” Jill Blotevogel tells TheWrap

The creators of MTV’s horror series “Scream” knew they had to have a killer twist for the finale of the 10-episode first season, but they didn’t know what it would be right away.

On Tuesday season finale, true-crime podcaster Piper Shay (Amelia Rose Blaire) was unmasked as the serial murderer who has been tormenting Emma (Willa Fitzgerald), culminating in a final showdown on the dock where Brandon James was killed years before.

“When we were talking about who the killer would be, it was just this great sort of synchronicity to have the same person who was telling the story be the person who was manipulating it the whole way,” series showrunner Jill Blotevogel told TheWrap. “That was sort of irresistible in making Piper the killer.”

Telling Blaire that her character was the killer proved to be surprisingly easy. “It’s hard news to drop, but to see the reaction in Amelia’s face — she was thrilled,” Blotevogel said, noting that producers broke the news to the actress at a Starbucks in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where the series was filmed.

“It was kind of funny, because it makes you wonder, ‘OK, this woman is thrilled that I just told her she’s a serial killer?’ She just started bubbling over with questions and ideas,” Blotevogel said. “Seeing that reaction kind of confirmed that it was the right call.”

Filming the final confrontation scene between Piper and Emma, producers didn’t know quite what to expect. “It really is sort of a different scene from what we had seen Amelia do before,” she said. “But we were all blown away when we got to that dock to film the final scene.”

Blotevogel admitted there’s good reason why the apparently close friendship between Emma and Piper seemed so real. “I’m sure there’s part of Piper that wanted a sister, but her psychopathic side was more powerful,” she said. “If Piper hadn’t been a psychopath, what a relationship that could have been.”

Blotevogel also shared more insight into the finale’s other big shocker — that Bex Taylor-Klaus’ Audrey might have been complicit in some of Piper’s crimes. Producers considered having another character play that role before settling on Audrey since they felt that she would provide “the perfect connecting tissue into Season 2.”

She added, “Because she is a character that we so empathize with, wanting to know just how deeply she was involved is a great question to bring us back next season.”
