As more and more Republicans do an about-face on their support of Donald Trump after this year’s midterm elections, “Late Night” host Seth Meyers is having a ball just watching. On Thursday’s show, he couldn’t help but compare the speed of the exodus to Sen. Josh Hawley fleeing from rioters on Jan. 6.
As part of his “A Closer Look” segment for the episode, Meyers played several clips of Republican lawmakers and hosts blaming Trump for the lack of a “red wave” in these midterms, pointing out how most Trump-endorsed candidates lost their elections. Looking ahead to 2024, it seems many in the party are reconsidering whether they’d back the twice impeached former president if he were to run again.
“Man, Republicans are running away from Trump faster than Josh Hawley on January 6,” Meyers joked. “These guys went from devoting themselves to Trump for over six years, to suddenly tossing him overboard in the span of 24 hours.”
Meyers admitted that the whole thing is pretty “fun to watch,” comparing the potential Republican battle to some major blockbusters.
“Fox News vs. Trump is like ‘Alien vs. Predator,’ or ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,’ or Biden vs. stairs,” Meyers joked, referring to the time Biden tripped up the stairs to Air Force One. “Well guess what? He’s not just gonna magically go away, especially after you spent six years slavishly supporting him. He’s Donald Trump. He’s incapable of keeping his mouth shut longer than five seconds.”
Digging in on the situation at hand for Republicans, Meyers had absolutely no sympathy for the struggles they faced this time around, and will likely continue to face.
“You guys created this monster, and now you’re gonna have to live with him. You don’t just get to wave it all away and say stuff like this,” Meyers said, playing a clip of one Fox host saying, “Trump is the past.”
“You wish he was!” Meyers exclaimed. “It’s too late motherf—er! You doinks could’ve helped impeach and convict him, and you probably would’ve been riding high on a red tsunami Tuesday, but instead you had to kiss the ring!”
