Showtime’s ‘The Chi’ Gets New Trailer Ahead of Premiere (Video)

Drama series set in Chicago’s South Side hails from “Master of None’s” Lena Waithe

“Showtime” has released a new trailer for its new drama series “The Chi” ahead of the show’s Sunday premiere.

The drama, which hails from Emmy-winning “Master of None” writer Lena Waithe, centers on a group of residents of the South Side of Chicago. The ensemble cast, led by “Straight Outta Compton’s” Jason Mitchell, also includes Jacob Latimore, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Alex Hibbert, Yolonda Ross, Armando Riesco and Tiffany Boone.

The new trailer intercuts shots of the show’s many characters, bookended by Kevin (Hibbert), the pre-teen who must step past shattered illusions and embrace the normal rites of childhood, and Brandon (Mitchell), the dreamer makes his own nearly impossible leap of faith to succeed in life and love with girlfriend Jerrika (Boone).

Waithe serves as creator and executive producer on the series, alongside Common and showrunner Elwood Reid. Aaron Kaplan, director Rick Famuyiwa also executive produce with Derek Dudley and Shelby Stone of Common’s Freedom Road Productions. The series is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios.

“The Chi” will premiere Sunday, Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. on Showtime.
