Sonic the Hedgehog is back for more superpowered shenanigans.
“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” comes just two years after the release of the first video game adaptation, which was a solid box office success grossing nearly $320 million in 2020. Jeff Fowler returns to direct the follow-up, which finds the speedster Sonic the Hedgehog teaming up with his best friend Tails upon the return of the evil Dr. Robotnik. But this time, Robotnik has an ace up his sleeve: the super-powered Knuckles.

Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog
Actor Ben Schwartz reprises his voice role as Sonic the Hedgehog, a superpowered hedgehog who struggles to be the hero. In the sequel, he teams up with a friend to stop a dastardly plot by villain Dr. Robotnik.
Schwartz is best known for his role as Jean-Ralphio on “Parks and Recreation” and his credits also include “Space Force,” “DuckTales” and most recently the Apple TV+ series “The Afterparty.”
Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower
The voice of Tails is provided by voice actor veteran Colleen O’Shaughnessey. Tails is a yellow fox who also has super powers and becomes Sonic’s best friend. O’Shaughnessey has been the voice of Tails in the “Sonic” video game franchise since 2014 and is also the voice of Sora Takenouchi in the “Digimon” franchise and Ino Yamanaka in the “Naruto” anime.
Idris Elba as Knuckles
The third and final major voice role in the sequels is the villainous echidna warrior Knuckles, voiced by actor Idris Elba. Knuckles has super strength and teams up with Dr. Robotnik to find the Master Emerald and defeat Sonic. Elba, of course, first burst onto the scene in “The Wire” and has since starred in “Luther,” “Prometheus,” “Pacific Rim,” “Molly’s Game” and “Star Trek Beyond.” He also voiced the character Fluke in “Finding Dory” and Shere Khan in 2016’s “The Jungle Book.”
Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik
Legendary comedic performer Jim Carrey reprises his role as villain Dr. Robotnik from the first film, a mad scientist and Sonic’s #1 enemy. Carrey, of course, is known for “Ace Ventura,” “Dumb and Dumber” and “Bruce Almighty” as well as more dramatic roles in films like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Man on the Moon.”
James Marsden as Tom Wachowski
James Marsden reprises his role as Sonic’s human companion Tom Wachowski, the sheriff of Green Hills, Montana. Marsden broke out as Cyclops in the original “X-Men” franchise and has also starred in “The Notebook,” “Enchanted” and “Hop” as well as the HBO series “Westworld.”
Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski
Also returning is Tika Sumpter as Tom’s wife Maddie. Sumpter’s credits include “Ride Along 2” and “Nobody’s Fool.”
Natasha Rothwell as Rachel
Comedian and actress Natasha Rothwell plays Maddie’s sister Rachel, who’s getting married in Hawaii prompting a trip for Sonic and his family. Rothwell is best known as a writer and performer on the HBO series “Insecure” and her credits also include “Love, Simon” and “Wonder Woman 1984” and she also voiced Zan in “DuckTales.”
Adam Pally as Wade Whipple
Actor Adam Pally plays Wade Whipple, Tom’s friend and deputy sheriff of Green Hills. Pally is best known for the ABC comedy series “Happy Endings” as well as the Fox comedy “The Mindy Project.”
Shemar Moore as Randall
Rachel’s fiancé Randall is played by Shemar Moore, longtime star of the soap opera “The Young and the Restless” and the CBS series “Criminal Minds.” He currently stars on the TV show “S.W.A.T.”
