Sound Editors Nominate ‘Gravity,’ ’12 Years a Slave’

The two frontrunners top all films in nominations for the MPSE’s Golden Reel Awards

“12 Years a Slave” and “Gravity” have found themselves at the top of another awards race, leading all films in nominations for the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards.

The two films each received three nominations in the seven feature-film categories. “Captain Phillips,” “The Hobbit,” “Lone Survivor,” “American Hustle” and “Inside Llewyn Davis” received two each.

Because the MPSE hands out separate awards for sound effects and foley, dialogue and ADR, and music, its nominations typically include all the Oscar nominees in the single sound editing category, plus many other films.

The MPSE also nominates in 15 additional television, computer entertainment and student categories; those will be announced separately.

The 61st Golden Reel Awards will be held on Feb. 16 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites in Los Angeles.
