Streamy Awards Big Winners Include ‘Video Game High School,’ LGBT Vlogger Tyler Oakley

Rapper Pitbull and beauty vlogger Michelle Phan receive ICON awards

The brightest stars of the Internet got their moment on the red carpet at the 4th Annual Streamy Awards presented Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton. “Video Game High School” came out the biggest winner, bringing home the awards for Best Ensemble, Best Action/Sci-Fi and Best Directing.

Fourteen categories were awarded at the event, joining 33 other winners announced earlier at the nominees reception at YouTube L.A. on Sept. 4. The other big winners of the night included LGBT advocate Tyler Oakley, who won the Audience Choice Entertainer of the Year and Ecuadorian web series “EnchufeTV,” which won the Audience Choice Show of the Year.

The evening was hosted by YouTube stars Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart and featured musical performances by Pentatonix, Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox and Starship.

Oakley, along with rapper Pitbull, beauty tipster Michelle Phan, and vlogger Shay Carl, received one of the the first-ever Streamys ICON Awards, recognizing leadership in online video and entertainment. Oakley’s “It Gets Better” viral anti-bullying campaign, became a global phenomenon and his work with The Trevor Project has helped the organization raise over a half a million dollars. Since posting his first video in 2007, Tyler’s channel has received more than 250 million views and 5.3 million subscribers.

Earlier this year, Freddie Wong’s “Video Game High School” shattered the all-time record for crowd-funding of a web series. Its Indiegogo campaign came to a close with a remarkable $900,907 in contributions. The web series claims more than 65 million views on websites alone and has grown from an Internet-based show to one with distribution via Blu-Ray, DVD, iTunes, Netflix, Microsoft Xbox LIVE and Sony PlayStation 3.
