‘Switched at Birth’ Creator Teases Big Development in Travis-Bay Relationship in Season Finale

“It’s something that has sort of organically formed and might be something really beautiful,” Lizzy Weiss tells TheWrap

SWITCHED AT BIRTH – "And Always Searching for Beauty" – Bay has her first art showing while Daphne applies for an international internship in the fourth season finale of “Switched at Birth,” airing Monday, October 26, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family. ABC Family renewed its family drama “Switched at Birth” for Season 5 last week, but first the show has to wrap up Season 4 with one last episode Monday night.

With John and Kathryn learning about Eric’s past, the Travis-Emmett-Bay love triangle about to come to a head and Toby and Lily’s baby on the way, the series has a lot to address in its season finale.

Series creator Lizzy Weiss teased the episode in an interview with TheWrap, promising that it would pick up right where last week’s cliffhanger left off, with Regina finally having to face the Kennishes about lying to them once again.

“John and Katherine — and even Bay — they always sort of go back to, ‘Regina always lies,’” Weiss told TheWrap. “Old baggage about the switch that they could never fully release, there’s always that kind of dynamic between them — ‘You’re the woman who kept our daughter from us for all those years.’”

TheWrap: John and Kathryn confronted Regina about Eric’s past at the end of last week’s episode. How will that play out further in the finale?

Weiss: They’re furious. Because they don’t even know legally what it means to have a fugitive in their house. Are they accomplices? John and Katherine — and even Bay — they always sort of go back to, “Regina always lies.” Old baggage about the switch that they could never fully release, there’s always that kind of dynamic between them — “You’re the woman who kept our daughter from us for all those years.” So they’re pretty angry. We pick back up in the finale just a moment after the end of last week’s episode, so we get to see Regina try to defend herself about why she didn’t tell them about Eric.

Quinn makes a reappearance in this episode. What does that mean for Daphne’s relationship with Mingo?
Quinn presents a lot of qualities that Mingo doesn’t have. They’re opposites, Mingo and Quinn. There’s something about Quinn’s life and how incredibly passionate he is about what he does, and that he does all of these amazing things, that to [Daphne] is almost like a role model. And it’s sexy to her, and it’s exciting. She almost doesn’t appreciate Mingo because his quality seems simple. He’s easy and fun, and they are athletic together, and they laugh a lot. It has to come to a head for her to decide which is more important to her and what she wants in the long run. So that triangle had to come to a head, and it does in the finale.

Will the love triangle between Travis, Emmett and Bay resolve itself in the finale?
The Travis-Emmett-Bay triangle is something we’ve been building all season, and really worked up to saving for the finale to also come to a head. And get to a moment where Travis has to lay his heart on the line. We’ll see how Bay responds.

That’s something that I think is very controversial for the fans. I do think that as many people who are rooting against it, there are people who are rooting for it and are excited by the prospect. Travis has grown up so much, and been such a great friend for her. And they’ve grown so close this season, it’s something that has sort of organically formed and might be something really beautiful.

“Switched at Birth” airs Monday at 8 p.m. on ABC Family.
