TCA: Roland S. Martin Says Royal Baby Getting ‘an Absolutely Stupid Amount of Attention’

NewsOne Now anchor explains how his show would cover the birth: "I would make fun of that damn story every single day"

Roland S. Martin says his new show "NewsOne Now" would have covered the birth of the royal baby — "but the story would be, this is an absolutely stupid amount of attention being paid to a child being born."

Getty ImagesMartin was asked at a Television Critics Association panel Wednesday how his coverage on the African-American-focused TV One would be different from that of other networks when it launches in September. He pointed to the royal baby coverage as an example.

"I can guarantee you, for probably about a week, I would make fun of that damn story every single day," said the CNN veteran.

Martin said the upcoming show would also focus on other stories most news outlets underplayed — like the recent death of bluesman Bobby Blue Bland.

TV One announced last month that Martin, a former CNN contributor, would host the new morning show.

Martin, the 2013 National Association of Black Journalists’ Journalist of the Year, will also be the managing editor of "News One Now." The show will be culled from the third hour of a three-hour radio program to be syndicated on Radio One network stations.

The program will feature a “Skype Net” component in which Radio One hosts will weigh in on the news. It will also be available online at NewsOne.com.
