“The Crown” and “Ozark” lead all programs with six nominations for the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards, which announced its 2020 television nominations on Monday.
Critics Choice Awards film nominees will be announced on Feb. 8, with the film and television awards handed out on March 7 at a ceremony whose format has yet to be determined.
“The Crown” and “Ozark” each received six nominations, including Best Drama Series. The drama series “Lovecraft Country,” the comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” and “What We Do in the Shadows” and the limited series “Mrs. America” all received five nominations, while “Better Call Saul” and “The Plot Against America” received four each.
Because the Critics Choice Awards’ television categories consider eligibility on a calendar-year basis while the Emmy Awards use a June-through-May television season, and because they are voted by television critics and journalists rather than TV professionals, the nominations differed dramatically from September’s Primetime Emmy Awards.
In the Best Drama Series category, Critics Choice nominations went to four series that had also received Emmy nominations (“Better Call Saul,” “The Crown,” “Ozark” and “The Mandalorian”) and four that had not (“The Good Fight,” “Lovecraft Country,” “Perry Mason” and “This Is Us”). The Critics’ Choice Best Comedy Series nominees included only two series also nominated by the Emmys, “Schitt’s Creek” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” and six that were not: “Better Things,” “The Flight Attendant,” “Mom,” “PEN15,” “Ramy” and “Ted Lasso.”
Other programs that premiered too late to qualify for the Emmys but were nominated for Critics Choice Awards included “The Queen’s Gambit,” “I May Destroy You,” Steve McQueen’s
“Small Axe” limited series and the filmed versions of the Broadway shows “Hamilton” and “What the Constitution Means to Me.”
Netflix led all networks or platforms in nominations with 26, with HBO and HBO Max a close second with 24. FX received 14 nominations, with CBS/CBS All Access and Hulu receiving seven each.
The Critics Choice Awards will be hosted by Taye Diggs for the third consecutive year and will air on the CW. Its format will depend on existing health and safety guidelines, though it seems unlikely that a full in-person ceremony will be feasible.
