‘This Is Us’ Star Chris Sullivan Calls Toby’s Moves ‘a Load of Bulls–‘ (Exclusive Video)

“They don’t mean anything to building a long-term relationship,” actor tells TheWrap

This Is Us” star Chris Sullivan is calling out his character, Toby, for those grandiose gestures toward girlfriend Kate (Chrissy Metz).

Sullivan told TheWrap that Toby might want to cut back on the big moves, which included a cross-country flight to surprise her for Christmas in Season 1.

“The knight-in-shining-armor stuff is kind of a load of bulls—,” Sullivan said. “All of those gestures, as lovely as they are, and as informative as they are, and as grand as they are, they don’t mean anything to building a long-term relationship.

“They don’t mean anything unless the two people involved get down honestly to their pain or to their suffering or to the source of their hurt, and go through that together,” he added.

The actor also said he’s relieved that “This Is Us” has been sharing more information this season about the mysterious cause of death of patriarch Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia).

“It’s good to get some of the secrets out, so we don’t have to keep them anymore as far as some of the clues about what’s going on with Jack,” the “Stranger Things” alum said.

Check out the video interview above to hear Sullivan question Toby’s true identity.

“This Is Us” airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
