NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw is “very pleased with the progress” of his cancer treatment.

The newsman, who revealed last month that he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma last August, gave an update on his health during an appearance (above) on “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

“As you know, I was keeping it as private as I possibly could, which I intend to continue doing,” Brokaw said. “I’m very pleased with the progress, and that’s about as far as I want to go.”

“A lot of people are going through what I’m going through, and they don’t have the advantages I do,” Brokaw continued. “I’m so conscious of that every day, because it involves the whole family and it’s tricky and it becomes a big strain. In our case, we’ve got the resources and access, and I’ve got this fabulous family. And so I am much more aware of what other families are going through, and I think we all have to be, as a matter of fact.”

Brokaw is best known for his 22-year run as anchor of “NBC Nightly News,” which ended in 2004. Since then, the veteran newsman has worked for NBC News as a special correspondent, and the news division said Brokaw has continued to work on special projects including contributing to NBC Sports’ Sochi Olympics coverage during his treatment.

“You have worked almost as much as you’ve always worked right through it, so I think that’s a good sign in and of itself,” Letterman said.

“Well, that’s been therapy for me,” Brokaw said. “I’m writing, I’ve been working, I’ve been on this broadcast, I’ve done things at NBC, and I want to have my other life.”
