Two Michael Jackson musicals dominated the nominations for the 75th annual Tony Awards on Monday, with newcomer composer Michael R. Jackson’s “A Strange Loop” leading with 11 nominations. “MJ: The Musical,” about the late King of Pop, and the 19th-century-set “Paradise Square” followed with 10 nods each.
Among plays, “The Lehman Trilogy” led with eight nominations — including nods for all three of its leading men: Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Adrian Lester. A new revival of Ntozake Shange’s “for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf,” due to close early later this month, followed with seven nominations.
Familiar stars such as Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster (“The Music Man”), Billy Crystal (“Mr. Saturday Night”), Sam Rockwell (“American Buffalo”), Phylicia Rashad (“Skeleton Crew”) and Mary-Louise Parker (“How I Learned to Drive”) all landed nominations in acting categories.
But there were also some noteworthy snubs. Daniel Craig failed to land a nomination for his starring turn in Sam Gold’s new blood-soaked revival of “Macbeth,” though costar Ruth Negga was recognized for her Lady Macbeth. Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker were also overlooked for their revival of Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite.” And the Beanie Feldstein-led revival of “Funny Girl” was almost completely shut out, save for a lone nomination for supporting player Jared Grimes.
The winner will be announced at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, June 12 in a broadcast that will air on CBS and Paramount+. Newly minted Oscar winner Ariana DeBose will host the ceremony.
