The transgender family drama “New People” is currently in development at Freeform.

“The Opposite of Sex” director Don Roos is attached to write and executive produce the series based on the book “Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family” by Amy Ellis Nutt. Both the series and the New York Times bestseller are inspired by the true story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother and their ordinary family’s extraordinary journey to celebrate the uniqueness in all of us.

The script deal follows last summer’s “Becoming Us,” the unscripted series following the Lehwald family, whose father recently came out as transgender.

Joel Silver and Rodney Ferrell will executive produce through Silver Pictures Productions, and Lionsgate Television, where Silver has a first-look deal.

Roos is represented by UTA and attorneys at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
