Trump Calls on Senate to End Filibusters for 51-Vote Majority

Shortsighted suggestion could hurt GOP in long run

President Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday to declare that Senate should change rules, which would upend precedent for short-term gain to get his healthcare and tax plans approved.

The Senate currently needs 60 votes to pass legislation, but Trump wants a simple 51-vote majority to be the new standard. While this would benefit the Trump administration in the short term, it would become a major roadblock in the event the Democrats take control after the 2018 midterm election.

Trump’s plan would change filibuster rules, essentially ending legislation-obstructing long speeches altogether, and give more power to smaller states.

The president has been extremely active on Twitter on Tuesday morning, also mocking the “fake news” and saying “Russian officials must be laughing” at the Democrats’ “lame excuse” for losing on Election Day.

Trump sent another tweet that is likely a response to recent comments by German Chancellor Angela Merkel that she can no longer rely on the United States.

“We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change,” Trump wrote.
