VH1 Orders Reality Series Starring ’90s Heartthrob Rico Suave and His Abs

Gerardo Mejia returns to public life in a newly greenlit show set to air later this year

VH1 has reached into the vault for its new series and pulled out ’90s heartthrob Gerardo Mejia.

You may know Mejia as “Rico Suave,” both his nickname and the title of his big 1990 hit. VH1 is bringing him (along with his family) back into the limelight with a 10-episode series order for the half-hour series, “Suave Says” (working title). It will premiere later this year.

“Gerardo and his crazy, musical family truly break the reality TV mold,” said VH1’s executive vice president of original programming and production, Susan Levison, in a statement. “We knew we had our next buzz-worthy series as soon as he walked through our door. Plus, he still has those abs.”

After the lights dimmed, Mejia apparently went on to become a music executive, marry a beauty queen and build a family. The series will follow the music exec, who helped usher Enrique Iglesias and others’ careers, as he and wife, Kathy, run their family.

“I can’t wait for VH1’s audience to meet my wild family,” said Mejia. “We’re like Ricky and Lucy but with a handful of crazy kids trying to run my casa.”

Edward Paige and Liane Su will executive-produce for Blank Paige Productions (“I Love Jenni”). Susan Levison, Jill Holmes, Kristen Kelly and Fernando Mills will executive-produce for VH1.
