Want to See ‘Fast & the Furious 6’ in IMAX? There’s Only 1 Choice

AMC's Time Square location is the sole domestic theater showing the sequel in 70mm

Moviegoers hoping to catch "Fast & the Furious 6" in IMAX this weekend are out of luck, unless they happen to live near Times Square in New York.

Only one theater in the United States is showing the cars and criminals sequel in the 70 mm format and that's AMC Empire 25 theater, located in the heart of Manhattan. That's not the only place in North America to see "Fast & the Furious 6" in IMAX. The film will also be shown in two IMAX locations in Canada, according to a company spokesman.

IMAX has a commitment to screen "Star Trek Into Darkness" in its domestic locations through the weekend and then plans to debut Will Smith's "After Earth" on its screens next weekend, so it did not have the flexibility to schedule showings of "Fast & the Furious 6" at other U.S. theaters.

Ryan Noonan, a spokesman for AMC, told TheWrap that AMC Empire 25 did not play "Star Trek Into Darkness," so it had an opening in its IMAX auditorium. "Fast & the Furious 6" will play in the Times Square venue at least through this week. He said that he did not know if the run would be extended beyond that point.

Overseas, moviegoers will have far more opportunities to catch "Fast & the Furious 6" in IMAX. The wide screen company will release the film this coming weekend in 21 international territories in a total of 62 locations. Among the countries that will be showing IMAX versions of the film are France, Israel, Poland, Spain, Brazil and Bulgaria.
