‘Wolf of Wall Street’ Collaborators Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio Honored at Santa Barbara International Film Festival

“The Wolf of Wall Street” marks the duo’s fifth — and most controversial — film together

“The Wolf of Wall Street” has drawn fire for supposedly glorifying greed and debauchery, but that’s not stopping the Santa Barbara International Film Festival from honoring director Martin Scorsese and star Leonardo DiCaprio with the Cinema Vanguard Award.

Executive Director Roger Durling announced on Thursday the frequent collaborators will receive the award on Feb. 6 at the historic Arlington Theater in the coastal town to celebrate their work together, which also includes “Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator,” “Shutter Island” and “The Departed.”

“Scorsese and DiCaprio’s partnership has become a legendary cinematic pas de deux recalling other great collaborations like John Ford and John Wayne, Fellini and Mastroianni, John Huston and Bogart – and even Scorsese and De Niro,” Durling said in a statement.

Past recipients include Amy Adams, Jean Dujardin & Bérénice Bejo, Nicole Kidman, Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Stanley Tucci, Christoph Waltz, Kristin Scott Thomas and Ryan Gosling. DiCaprio and Scorsese will add further luster to this year’s festival, which is honoring Robert Redford, Emma Thompson, Cate Blanchett and Oprah Winfrey, among others.

“The Wolf of Wall Street,” an R-rated black comedy of sorts about the rise and fall of former millionaire stock broker Jordan Belfort, has been nominated by the Producers Guild of America for the top feature-film award, and is also in the running for several Golden Globes. It has been nominated for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, as well as a Best Actor nomination in the musical or comedy category for DiCaprio.

The movie, nearly 3 hours long, has struck a nerve among viewers and critics, who have alternately praised and deplored Scorsese’s depiction of excess.

The 29th annual SBIFF kicks off on Jan. 30 and runs through Feb. 9.
