YouTube Launches Subscription Service, Original Shows

New series from digital stars PewDiePie and Lilly Singh to premiere in 2016 on YouTube Red

YouTube is introducing a new advertisement-free subscription video service, YouTube Red, the company announced Wednesday.

The service, which will cost $9.99 per month and debut Oct. 28, will allow users to view videos ad-free, and to save videos for offline viewing on phones and tablet devices. It will also give users access to YouTube’s recently launched gaming app and a new music app, YouTube Music, also unveiled Wednesday, as well as Google Play music.

The company additionally announced a new original-programming initiative as part of the subscription service. That initiative, which will feature new series and movies from digital talent such as PewDiePie and Lilly Singh, will launch in 2016, with those and other shows being made available exclusively to subscribers.

“Consumers are embracing paid subscription for ad-free content at an incredible pace,” Robert Kyncl, YouTube Chief Business Officer, said Wednesday at a press event at YouTube Space Los Angeles.

YouTube will continue to offer its existing, free, ad-supported services. The company’s venture into subscription-service territory follows several moves by competitors in that space. In September, Hulu, long an ad-supported streaming service, launched an ad-free option for $11.99 a month. One month later, Netflix raised the price of its standard streaming plan by $1, to $9.99.

Earlier this year, cable channels HBO and Showtime launched their own standalone streaming services.
