6(66) Reasons 'Twilight' Is Doomed

We've seen the "Twilight" frenzy and box-office predictions, but heed our warning!

Hear me, members of the coven. A new moon is rising on these November nights, a new day will dawn across the land -- and the “Twilight Saga” is doomed.

Yes, we’ve seen the frenzy “Twilight” causes. We know that the conventional wisdom is that “New Moon” will outperform the first “Twilight” film -- which made almost $384 million worldwide and $168 million on DVD. But there’s more going on than meets the eye.

Heed our warning now. In the long term, the "Twilight” saga has a stake through its heart. Here are 6 (66) reasons why …

1. IT’S BORING.Peel off the PR and the fact is the books are badly written. As “New Moon” proves all too well, nothing happens in the movies. The characters are caricatures, with Bella Swan as a nightmare needy girlfriend, Edward Cullen a total cold fish and Jacob Black as an alluring but emotionally insecure werewolf. There’s pointless plodding for plot. This isn’t even soap opera -- it's just suds with no opera.

Want to see a good sexy vampire movie full of passionate love, longing glances and suffering souls? Take the advice of Lauren Bacall. The legendary actress, who knows a thing or two about movies and true love, told her granddaughter earlier this year, after watching the first “Twilight,” about the real-deal undead. It’s called “Nosferatu.” It came out in 1922. Watch it.

2. LOW-WATTAGE LEADING MAN.

Robert Pattinson is not actually on screen for much of “New Moon.” The sequel is really about the growth (or lack thereof) of Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart and her hair, when Pattinson's Edward Cullen leaves her to save her, and about her budding romance with the devoted Jacob Black. And, yet, it is Pattinson’s star power that drives the marketing of the movie. Expect mucho disappointment.

What's more, Pattinson -- who as an already 100-year-old vampire is not supposed to age -- is at 23 already looking too old to play a teenager. He doesn't even have, say, the height advantage that keeps Daniel Radcliffe believable in the "Harry Potter" franchise.

What's more, given all the acclaim being thrown his way, by the time the fourth (or fifth?) "Twilight" book is ready to be filmed, Pattinson will clearly hope to be deep into a career following the path of Leonardo DiCaprio, who went from “Titanic” to being Martin Scorsese’s main man.

Of course, you have to have some degree of acting range to pull that off. And if Pattinson's inarticulate inability to open an envelope, let alone a film on his own -- see “Little Ashes,” oh, that’s right, nobody did -- is any indication, the future for the actor might be best prophesied in two words: Mark Hamill.

3. A CHRIS IS NOT A CATHERINE.

She may overdo it with the handheld camera and be a bit flat in her setups, but director Catherine Hardwicke certainly brought an intimacy and, as the baseball game scene deftly displays, a sense of urgent style to the first “Twilight” flick.

Hardwicke delivered Summit an almost $70 million opening weekend in November 2008, helmed all the original elements in what is the franchise's formula and helped craft the movie's multi-platinum soundtrack.

I loved the movie, and I found Pattinson, and most of the cast, to be amateur actors. It was like a great technical team - director, cinematographer, and special effects supervisors - had to make do with the cast of a 1980s campus caper. Its a fantasy movie in every way - about vampires, werewolves, eternal love, immortality, emotionally intense men a la Byron, clingy, needy girls a la the support cast of some Dickens novels. Finally, the point is that the movie was good, and because you wanna know what happens to a story that ends as abruptly as twilight, New Moon is NOT going to fail at cash counters.

The books suck, agreed...they're for teenage girls and middle-aged women and grandmothers who feel young sometimes and didn't watch Nosferatu or read "To Kill a Mockingbird", but just did regular, normal, half-educated stuff. Education is STILL a privilege, not a necessity. A well-educated society would probably reject any kind of fantasy movie that didn't have a philosophical message. That means Superman, Spiderman, Harry Potter and LOTR fail. How about that?

get real.

FAIL. Of course, most reviewers think the movie FAILs also, I haven't seen it, don't really have an interest. But, this BO prediction FAILed just a tensy bit, eh?

You guys should all be ashamed of yourselves. Saying the movies sucked, and the actors are bad, and Stephenie Meyer can't wrute, and on and on and on... Really, if you dont like the movies or the books, thats great. Say that. You really don't need to go comment about people and their work. Lets see you do better. Have some respect.

Patten, you don't know what you're talking about. I can't believe you've actually won an award for journalism. This article is just embarassing. You didn't get anything right.

Miley Cyrus? Did you just use her as a reason? Give me back the two minutes I wasted on reading this piece of garbage.

If the Twilight franchise ever goes down the tubes it is more likely that we will have another one to move it out of the way. That is really the problem with the books-turned-mega-money-making-movies syndrome - they [honestly] just don't last very long.

Harry Potter is doing pretty good, but that is because the movies AND the books are, no doubt, entertaining and watcheable. Having read Stephenie Meyer's books, and I say now I didn't see anything earthshatteringly different about the books, I find this article biased in more ways than one. It didn't even give the franchise a chance.

As others have been saying, the article is honestly just badly written and poorly thought out. Robert Pattinson holds his own but what did you want him to be? The male version of Meryl Streep? I mean, give the poor man a break! The Twilight movies were made for their intended audiences. Seriously, no one is holding you over a 10,000 foot precipice to see the movie. You don't have to see the movie if you don't want to. Let the fans enjoy their movie, and the haters stay 100 feet away from it.

To be blunt, if you (and this also includes all other critics who have been bitching about the Twilight franchise) hate the movie so much and see all its 'faults' (which any and every movie has), please feel free to send your script to the studio that produces Twilight so we can see your 'better' version of the movie. Sometimes, you guys don't give movies even enough time to start playing before you're already complaining. Come on - is it really THAT bad, or are you guys just hating? The same thing happened with 300 - it was getting a bad rap for nearly everything.

I mean, do you guys even give a movie a chance before you start nitpicking? Before you sit down in a movie theatre, enjoy the movie for what it is and stop trying to get mad and compare it to another movie. In my opinion, it's rather ignorant to compare 'Nosferatu' and 'Twilight' together. That's like comparing creme brulee to pancakes. They were made for two completely different tastes, and if you don't like creme brulee you don't like it, period, but that doesn't mean you have the right to piss all over it.

And, please, Miley Cyrus does not count as a reputable mediator for us to see or not see Twilight. That just about killed the article right there.

You honestly think that the opinion of Miley Cyrus matters to Twilighters (that's a different demographic, do your research). That one of the things wrong with this slapped together article.

And ha! As of the numbers and reaction as of last Friday.
$50 million budget, and almost $300 million within the first week. I'm not even a Twilighter , but I recognize a huge fail when I see it and...this article is a fail...major.

Hi Beckie!

I am glad that you are an avid reader of fiction which is always a good thing, cos I hate when people trash something and they don't even bother to read. But you cannot be serious Laurell K Hamiliton has turned Anita Blake into Jenna Jamison on crack! She went from a conservative girl who hadn't had sex in over a year, to a girl who has to screw something every five minutes. I was a fan but I just got so tired of the Adour being an excuse to screw everything! I mean really seriously hot men are cool but no way I want to be in bed with five of them sugar is definitely in that tank!
The one time she raised the Adour to something higher at the end of one of her latest books to be not about just sex but love. I was relieved then I open the next book and in page two an orgy is starting I put the book down and refuse to read her again. I mean seriously why read porn if I want porn I'll put in one my boyfriend's DVD's. Not read smut. Try reading L. A Banks, and Sherrilyn Kenyon who is the best prenatural fiction writer out there!

This article sums up my thoughts on this series entirely: http://www.bukisa.com/articles/194589_should-young-girls-be-reading-twil...

People that love the twilight movies are people that love the Books and i believe will stay loyal to the movies. We want to see what we have read and love be on the big screen. I believe that the next two movies will make even more money. They are obviously getting better and better every time.
Yes, twilight fans are mostly teenagers but there are also moms and even grandmothers that love these books. With New mooN now out in theaters there will be even more fans. Just go to blockbuster or any movie rental place and twilight is still always out. Go to any lubrary and the books have a long waiting list. New people are coming around to read the books and are loving the movies.
This guy that wrote this article is obviously not a twilight fan and thats ok. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion but I dont think that he should be talking smack about the actors and dooming their careers.
Lets see what this biiter man has to say when the next movie comes out. All I know is he's gonna want to bite his tounge when he sees the box office $$$!!!! hahah...in your face!!!

Catharine Hardwicke as a good director? Oh man, that's the funniest thing I've heard all week!

Today I stumble upon the article of the reasons why Twilight is doomed.
Well it really fascinates me how people like Dominic Patten give "opinions" on a subject that clearly don't understand.
Of course you don't need my e-mail since the numbers for the weekend box office are out and guess what??? well you know what.
Obviously Mr. Patten doesn't understand what is behind the Twilight series and therefore can't and will never get why is such a big success, and so if you don't get it please, please, please don't give your opinion.

Congratulations. You, like me, have fallen for a trap article. How do they work, you ask? Here:

Step One: Pick a current cultural zeitgeist. Preferably this should be something that has a core group of obsessive, zombie-like followers: iPhones, Twilight, Obama, whatever.

Step Two: Come up with a hypothesis that would seem heretical to that cultural item's followers. Make that your headline.

Step Three: Phone in a bunch of reasons why your argument is completely sound. Even if what you're saying is completely counter-intuitive, it doesn't matter. Just write it. Put it in list form, if you'd like. It makes it easier to write without having to pause too long to think.

Step Four: Bask in the glory. Watch as your website is inundated with thousands of hits from the people whose emotions you've riled up with your garbage. People will type up two-page screeds on why it is that you are in fact a worthless idiot, and other people will type up even longer screeds on why you are a genius for saying what finally needed to be said.

Well done, Dominic. You make the Internet proud.

This is an extremely self-indulgent and blindly fanatical post, surely as much so as any Twilight fan. With the largest opening day in history, Twilight isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Anyone who thinks so, is as delusion as someone who thought this movie was actually good.

Haha. everyone defending twilight by commenting on its legions of fans must be just another horny, pre-pubescant teenager. Oops, i meant "twilight fan".

Finally! Someone who isn't brainwashed by the trite nonsense that is Twilight. Ones who state that they are well read and well educated, obviously don't have the capacity for intelligence or the ideas that in order to be well read and highly educated: you need to get out of the bubble that is your life. You have to read more than Mormon Vampires, that are not representative of vampires but the FEY. Meyer got one thing right: she described what happens to a fey (or Fairies for those of the small IQ's AKA Twilight fans) they glisten and shimmer like gold in the son and they are cold and as hard as stone and incredibly irresistable to the opposite sex.

Read Charlaine Harris: author of the Southern Vampire Mysteries: AKA the True Blood Books, in which the lead female is part fey and has fey cousins. Twilight fans be warned, if you read these, there is a lot of SEX and BLOOD exchanges and FANGBANGERS and Oh, actual VIOLENCE, not let's talk about it forever and a day.

Read Laurell K. Hamilton: the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter novels, first published in 1993 and containing: wait for it: A love triangle between a VAMPIRE, a petite Brunette who is irresistable to all those around her and who happens to be strong and independent, not simpering and cowering waiting for someone to rescue her, and a sexy Werewolf. Sound familiar? Stephenie Meyer went to an LKH workshop and took the premise and cleaned it up. She took out the sex, and all the things that made it a vampire book and added small elements of things she remembered from the section about the fey and voila: She took a wonderful series of over 17 books (book 18 and 19 in 2010) and watered them down into a mishapen mass of "oh he's so beautiful". "He sparkeled, he's so beautiful" "oh my god he's so beautiful". WTF. It's garbage. It's not even worth the paper it's written on.

It's a menace to teens and women of all ages, and women who have not been in a loving and healthy relationship, or grew up seeing a healthy male female relationship will think and feel that stalking and being so possessive and obsessive is true love and adoration. It's not. It's creepy and disturbing that fellow women in this world want a man like Edward: a man who denies you what you wish, nearly kills you from it, rapes you (unconscious sex is rape people), and then forbids you to see your family, friends or loved ones again. Women who live for Twilight need serious Psychiatric help and need relationship counseling and therapy. Lots and lots of therapy.

Also, anyone who feels that this piece of drivel will ascend to the heights of Jane Eyre, The Raven, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, need see only a Series of Unfortunate Events: does anyone recall Lemony Snicket?

Obviously not.

Twilight fans: Nothing more of the closed mindedness and empty brains that you possess. Learn to read more than just fluff books, don't flock to Gossip Girl books, or other "Summer Reading" books like Twilight. Perhaps start with "To Kill A Mockingbird", which I devoured at the age of 8. Follow it by a foray into Dean Koontz and John Saul, which I also did in the 3rd grade. Read something challenging, not the same old nonsense.

OK Let's be honest.

Any journalist or professional writer knows that Stephanie Meyer can't write to save her life. Her style and prose are terrible giving the books about a 4th grade reading level. In fact, most movie critics who gave a good review had to defend themselves by pointing out that the movie has terrible dialogue and story to work with, but it still did the job by appealing to its targeted fan base. But that mostly consists of a bunch of fanatic teenage girls who just need something pretty to look at for 2 hours to be entertained.

That being said, the first three points make sense... the last three are just filler.

P.S. I HAVE read all the books and have seen both movies.

Ok, now lets read a review from an educated women who actually read the books! Dominic's comments read as though he hasn't a clue as to why the Twilight books and respective films are and will be a huge success - just watch!!

oh man. $141 million opening weekend. Dont you look like an idiot.

Dominic Patten's critiques certainly missed its mark. Outside theaters across America Twilight fans stood in long lines to watch teenage angst portrayed in a thoroughly entertaining genre.
Dominic comes off like many movie critics as a bitter cynic jealous of someone else's success.
I'm a 66 years old fan who enjoys the Saga books and movies; I also get a big kick out of watching my grandchildren and their friends' fascination with a tired old plot being retold to them with a fresh twist of an equally old theme: Vampires.
Get a real job, Dominic. Let the fans have their fun.

Dude!
Not only does Twilight have one great male lead, Robert Pattinson, but they actually have two: Taylor Lautner. And he's a doll!
http://www.twilighteclipse.info/taylor-lautner-doll

its all about the us.
you can say what you want and have your opinions, but its all up to the fans in the end. i am 21 and got turned onto the books from my 14 yr old sister. i loved them i enjoy the romance and storyline. everyone knows the books are better than the movies, but hey. rob is amazing to look at, kristen is beautiful and taylor isn't too bad himself.
its just fun
chill
sip on that hatorade :)

Were you sleeping when you wrote this? All you have to do is look at the numbers....the opening night brought in 5 times the amount of money other movies did opening the same time....Stephenie Meyer's breaking dawn has been in the top ten most purchased books for 67 weeks! 67 weeks....that seems pretty long to me. Someone needs to discuss your fact finding info out with you...cuz right now you got your facts wrong. Twilight is just a fad and like many other fads it will fade...but right now It's amazingly strong....

Nice try with the cracked.com list structure, but the humor fell short. "it's just suds with no opera." Yikes.

okaii youre so right in some things (NOTE: im a twilight fan and im a teenage too) i really really hate to say it but the movies are such a dissapointment to many of us. although one of the comments below has a point:the film is just based on the books there is no possible way you can get a 500 page book in less than 2 hrs. yes it left out many things and yes the cheesy talk was...well horrible. (not to mention the first movie) but well to those who are really in love with the first film the second one will do it for them. As for those who know the first movie was lame and boring and that new moon got better only in the sparkling effect (its still not good but its better than in the first one)and some of the makeup ooh yeah and finally giving it some humor.(although gosh there were some parts that were ment to be serious and the scenes just made you giggle.)

REASON ONE:so true for the first movie (in the second one only the beginning was decent)

REASON TWO: well i think it has to do with the way the director took things way too serious about the undead i mean he literally sucked the life off the movie. But well we´ve only seen Robert in few movies and well this leading role is not the best way to really show off he´s acting (if hes really got some) I think we will see that on his next movie REMEMBER ME. the same for kristen and taylor.

REASON THREE:true (except for the fact that i liked the first one even less than the second)

REASON FOUR: mmm yes but no. you dont have much science in this: people love twilight they will go watch it just for the heck of it. and here´s whats happening: summit is getting them out fast!eclipse on theaters june 30 (maybe thats why there so bad there made too quick!)

REASON FIVE: mmm no, i think that was pretty much what saved the movie a little: he´s acting and dakota fanning´s and i think rachel lefevre did a good job (anybody knows why the hell they fired her??)

REASON SIX:okaii what the heck with that point?? are we all supposed to think like miley? and i think that was the worst example MILEY???(isnt she too busy with racial photos?? oh yeah also dating guys with girlfriends) gosh take a look at her life! do you reeally expect her to be caring about teen things??? mm also why is she a bad example? i think JEALOUSY is the key word. Miley Cyrus or Robert Pattinson? Hannah Montana the movie or The Twilight Saga?? the answer to both is obvious.

i think many of us (dissapointed twilight fans) will only put hope in ECLIPSE.

PS: sorry if i had any gramatical errors is just that is been a long time since i write in english,i´ve been in Mexico for a long time. (you know, what in the world will i write in english here)

Good grief, the books weren't written to change the world, they were written to entertain. And have done just that for millions. If I want higher level reading, I pick up Pride and Prejudice, A Midsummer Night's Dream or the like.
Interesting that Patten liked the first movie(or at least the director) as I'd say 90% of people did not. I've read all the books at least twice, including Midnight Sun, and was totally lost on the first movie. In fact, I wish they'd go back and completely redo it. The second movie was well done. And as the box office numbers show, this is one train that's not going to die anytime soon despite the desires of the Miley's of the world. (Oh please, like anyone gives a turd what she thinks. Just another teen angst attempt to be 'different'.)
You'll be eating your words, Patten, come June 30, 2010.

"OMG liek if you hat TWILIGHT then ur just old why waste ur energy hateing it its not for u ur old!!!1"

It's a film critic's job to critique film, regardless of whether said critic matches the target demographic of the film. Dissociating from the tween-appeasing content, the first 'Twilight' was one of the most poorly directed, poorly written, poorly acted, poorly edited, poorly conceived, and poorly executed movies I've seen in a long time that didn't have a guy and some robot puppets lampooning it throughout.

The dialogue is laughable. When Edward laments to Bella, "You're like my own personal brand of heroin," I laughed myself into tears. Unfortunately, it's not so-bad-its-good, like, say, 'Road House.' It's so bad it's bizarre. Like David Lynch on an ether binge.

And, yes. It's an exhaustingly overt parable for frustrated teen sexuality. And, yes, it's about one intellectual notch below RL Stein's "Goosebumps" series. Also, it's fraught with Stephenie Meyer's Latter Day Saint propaganda, exemplified nicely by Jacob and his tribe of silly, outdated Native American stereotypes (According to the Book of Mormon, the red skin of Natives is a curse by God, so it's unsurprising that the filmmakers couldn't find any actual Native actors to star in the films).

It is, in the long run, doomed. The author is right. Like Color Me Badd, pog collecting, and the Macarena before it, 'Twilight''s shelf life will be short, and, thankfully, the whole phenomenon will be not but a mere punchline in a few years. So you kids can be all mopey and emo about that.

Well, actually to sum up what i think of the movies and books into one word: IDIOTIC!, I read the books after the movie was released to see what the hype was all about, also my friend was reading it and she said it was brilliant, so i ws like 'what the hell? why not', it was terrible, a week after reading them i said to my friend 'why do you like it?" guess what she says, she goes 'don't you think edward is just dreamy, and hot, just a perfect guy, oh laheba, i think jasper is perfect for you, he matches your personality exactly, you would be great together', how stupid are you people!!

you twilight fanatics think this is one of the best movies/books to ever exist all due to your infatuation, if you were to get out of your imaginary, sparkly-vampire bubble, then you will see not all vampires sparkle like the fairies in the Tinkerbell movies.

vampires are not vegetarians, they atleast have FANGS, i mean in the first movie if you look closely, in the baseball field scene when confronted with james and his coven, when they are 'snarling' at each other, baring their teeth and crouching in front of bella in a defensive manner, they have no FANGS!!!

so this is what every girl is going crazy after, fangless vampires, it's hysterical! and REAL vampires are selfish, go read the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles. now that author can write a vampire, take Lestat for an example, he is a vampire, like the twilight vampires,he is beautiful, no woman can resist him, but he's merciless, like a real vampire, not a vegetarian, like a real vampire, and also i remember reading someone writing about how you twilight lovers should watch the true blood vampires, i agree, go see them aswell.

i also agree with another point a person said on here is that twilight is just a craze, i just don't understand why mothers and other mature adults are getting brainwashed, do you not have the decency to see past the faces of some actors whose faces have been caked in make-up?!

At least Harry Potter has a good storyline, i mean it is twice the hit twilight is!!!

if you love a girl, you don't stalk her and watch her sleep, and it is not allowed just because he is handsome, get a brain cell!

and as for the werewolves... they are just normal wolves that are bit bigger than their usual size. and aren't werewolves meant to eat meat and are a bit like vampires (not twilight ones), like they eat children.

they don't go imprinting on them. paedophilia is a bad thing, not good!

so to sum this all up:

BAD MOVIES
HORRIBLE BOOKS

Don't you guys get it? Obviously the creators of Twilight want to teach us that we can make big bucks just by making bad fiction and selling it to the stupid people. They're counting their money and sipping champagne while we complain about how bad the movies/books are. I'm thinking of making a movie about a teenage girl who got the hots for Bigfoot.. cha-ching!

This is 6 reasons why Twilight sucks, not why it's doomed. No one that goes to see Twilight cares about any of these reasons, so what is your point, really? It's doomed to critical panning and an eternity of nerds who are pissed about Twilight ruining their "real vampire" image to talk badly about it? I think the movies are quite sub-par, however, it can't be denied the attraction it has to their fan base and to say it will not be successful verges on idiotic, to be honest.

It's a stupid fantasy movie, who CARES I can't figure out why people get so worked up over a movie. I agree with a poster earlier who said that Twilight haters are just as annoying as frenzied Twi-hards.

Okay, interesting theory but already proven wrong by reality. The second one has just broken "The Dark Knight's" opening day record, so it's save to say it will outgross its predecessor. What else can you expect? Maybe the third one next summer will go down a bit in popularity due to heavier competeion but there won't be a stake through the heart of this franchise economically.

That said, these movies are far from being perfect. But that doesn't change they will all be Box Office juggernauts!

Sorry, won't fail. Bad original movie + vapid women and girls= more movies. Sad to say its not just airheaded screaming teen girls. Its all the way to middle aged women who like this crap. Oh well.

it wont fail, i agree with that. simply because the average teenage girl is mindless because of the dumbness of everything they read and watch on TV.. ex "american idol" "dancing with the stars" "work for diddy" "for the love of ray j" and the list goes on and on and on.. they text mindless stuff back and forth all day, so of course they think the books are well written....theyre written specifically for the undereducated teen girl that all hope that their sugar daddy will come along and sweep them off their feet..and he wont be balding and fat but a hunk thatll be dark and mysterious...whats sad is that they should just realize now whatever videogame playing dork ur currently competing with the xbox 360 for his undivided attention it will never happen..and u will wind up pregnant and unsatisfied for the rest of your life because u lived in fairy tales until it was too late to course correct. twilight is a simple mormon womans attempt at feeling that her life wasnt a complete waste by dreaming what it woulda been like if a vampire swept her off her feet, but then forgot to actually research what a vampire is, or do any kind of research, and then pass of the ignorance as creativity or imagination. stephanie meyer....vampires dont glitter in the sunlight, werewolves arent just really cute, giant wolves...if there are any witches in the twilight universe id hate to see what they look like, prob look like the wicked with from the wizard of oz..green skin included. any of u young ladies wanna see an excellent version of what vampires should be, catch true blood on HBO, or BLADE, the upcoming movie "daywalkers" and of course the classic BUFFY and ANGEL.....even MOONLIGHT got vampires right. i suppose meyer was livin under a rock all these years....but......then again , shes a mormon...should anyone really be surprised she really doesnt know anything.

BAD ACTING.
BAD SCREENPLAY.
BAD MOVIES.

It's hilarious seeing little girls(and others who should kill themselves immediately) take up for this drivel. Saying that Twilight is creative, inspired and original shows that you are stupid. Watch Buffy or Angel, and tell me that it's not derivative.

Buffy and Angel(though aimed mostly at girls) were witty, fun, and seriously creative. Twilight is sort of like Juno(without some talented, funny actors being in a horribly overrated faux hipster/indie film.) It's just going to inspire obtuse girls to write, and frankly, that's not a good thing.

Fans of Twilight are all doomed... the pretty girls can marry rich, but something tells me they'll be strippers instead of becoming doctors. And the ugly girls will be watching Stargate and collecting mugs with cats on them. While still obsessing over Twilight(even though you will be older, 50 pounds heavier, and sadder.)

Oh my gosh, just saw New Moon and it royally sucks!! What a horrible waste of time and money. Good riddance.

THANK YOU for this article!!! I was a Twilight fan, I even have a T-shirt to prove it, but after seeing the first movie, I realized how much the films were going to suck. I hate that the movies make so much money when they are stupid, horrible movies. I can't stand teenage girls screaming about how "It was the best movie ever!" when the movie in reality is badly written and badly done. I mean, have you seen the special effects of the vampires more fast? Because it looked so ridiculous I laughed. And maybe New Moon is "SO MUCH BETTER THAN TWILIGHT" but that's only because I'm not sure they could have made a sequel that was worse than Twilight.

Just like NSYNC, Twilight will go out of style and the fans won't want anything to do with it. Unlike Harry Potter, the fans don't have well written books with depth and strong characters. Twilight is all about a whiny girl and her inability to be independent. I hate these films are just reinforcing to young girls the apparent life or death "need" to be loved by a guy. These films are doing nothing but making people stupid.

As an English teacher, I have to agree and say the books are poorly written. There are many grammatical errors and she is too repetitive in her word usage. There’s really no way Bella can hiss things as much as she does…especially when there are no “s’s” in the words Edward or Jacob. As a woman, I have to say it shows women who cannot take care of themselves and who have to be completely dependent on the man to keep them upright and walking. New Moon showed us that women should curl up and give up on life after our boyfriend breaks up with us after 6 or 7 months of dating. There are too many times Bella claims Edward is too good for her, she doesn’t fit with him, why would he ever love her?? Why do we want to spread this around? Love is irrational and everyone deserves it. That being said, the books are intended for Young Adult readers and everyone who has a problem with them are not Young Adults. They’re fun to read and they’re an easy read to get through…as long as people remember that women are not as weak as Bella and guys are not as intense as Edward

OMG. Twilight haters are worse than the Twi-hards. How does this franchise affect your life in any way? If you dislike it so much why do you put so much energy into hating it? Ignore it, move on and don't spoil it for the rest of us.

Did you read my message to you, hack? Think this puts you in good odor? You've really covered yourself in glory on this one.

This article blows. Dear Dominic Patten: The books are amazing, I've read all four of them and they are just great! The writing style is great, I have no idea what you are talking about, You're a journalist right? So shouldn't you know something about writing style? Obviously not. You think it's poorly written well about half the country disagrees with you. All those people bought the books too so obviously they aren't horrible. Use some common sense. The movies are just BASED on the books so of course they are going to be different and not totally follow the book verbatim. No movie based on a book does. It's more like the books inspired the movies. Twilight wasn't horrible just low-budget and yes the filming was so-so but then it still made hella money and people loved it. Come on dude, that kinda says something! And the second movie, New Moon, made even more money, the filming was way better and so was the acting. Eclipse is probably going to be even better than New Moon. This saga isn't doomed, the ratings prove that. So do the huge number of fans world wide. Let me say that again slowly so you can understand, fans WORLD WIDE love this movie, so it can't be doomed if every movie they make people just seem to like even more. I'm pretty sure you're just doing your job, you need some publicity so you ragged on something popular. Hmmm Sounds familiar eh? Are you still stuck back in high school? Isn't that what the nerdy, no-one-likes-me losers did to the popular kids? I mean come on man! If the movies were doomed I'm pretty sure in stead of the movies getting better they would just get worse, well I'm damn sure(and so it the successes at the box office) that that is not the case. end of story. CASE AND POINT. I win =]

While I agree that the books/movies are not original, nor enjoyable, I would not go so far so to say that this saga is "doomed". These movies/books are on trend as far as this generation goes. There is no wit, no real romance in Twilight, but this generation doesn't really have a heart for those things. "This guy's hot" is usually a good enough reason to love a movie nowadays and that is why I'm sure these movies will still be popular for years to come.

I am a teenager who absolutely loves the books. What I can say is that it shows that two worlds can be united. The books are about two people who are absolutely in love and have had that "draw" to each other ever since they first saw each other. It just has the twist of Vampires, Werewolves, and a needy teenage girl. But aren't all teenage girls in someway needy like Bella? or in fact all women? We all have needs, and Edward meets the needs that Bella has.
When people say that this is just a "fad" they may be correct, but aren't all series the same fad? Twilight gives people the opportunity to have their imagination come to life, like all dreams, it is the unlikely union of two people. What I think it comes down to is Imagination; I believe that Twilight brings out the imagination of all Woman. We're able to dream up a man who is completely gorgeous and a woman who is somewhat like ourselves, whether that's being needy, or whatever insecurities we might have.
I believe that people shouldn't blame the Actors in the movie, they are trying their best to make a film that will please everyone, and no matter how hard they try, it won't happen. Everyone is bound to have their own opinions, that's what makes us unique; but when it comes to stepping on other people to get your opinion across, I believe that's crossing a line.
Whether or not you like the Twilight Series, that is fine. I'm a teenager who is sharing her opinion on why this series might be so popular for a lot of woman of different ages. I don't care if people don't believe this posting, I'm just trying to share a different point of view, like anyone else who has posted anything about this series.

Doesn't anyone have an imagination anymore....Geeze, the books were great and so were both movies. Sometimes you hust have to get out of reality for a little while.
And for Miley, who cares what the cheesy tween has to say.

Interesting.

But I'm afraid the numbers will prove (have proven?) you wrong. Never underestimate the power of obsessed teenage girls!

When the teen queen of bland says, “I don’t like it … don’t even talk about it,” as Miley told a Cleveland radio station this week about “Twilight” and the release of “New Moon,” you know you’ve lost the heartland.

You are right, Miley Cyrus is the queen of bland. But why even use her opinion as a 6th reason for why this movie is doomed? Obviously Dominic Patten ran out of a legitimate 6th reason. Fine if he thought the movie was boring, doesn't like Rob Pattinson and thinks Catherine Hardwicke is a better director. We are all entitled to our opinions. But to use Miley Cyrus as a voice for "the heartland" is pathetic. Get real! She admitted that she has never read the books nor has she seen the movies so how can you even consider her a source?
By the way,the Twilight movie was great but New Moon was even better. I have read all four books amongst many, many, many other books throughout my forty two years as I am an avid reader. I enjoyed Stephanie Meyer's style of writing and I think she is great.
Unlike Dominic, I couldn't agree more with anonymous writer.
"i think dominic needs a new job and he says stephanie meyer can't write.......hes the one that cant write.....his article sucks".

i think dominic needs a new job and he says stephanie meyer can't write.......hes the one that cant write.....his article sucks

From one Ruby to another, Ms. Ruby, if you dont care for the movie or the book it doesnt make those who do "tards". You are an insensitive female who tries to use name calling (not even an orginial slam - but borrowed) to sound superior. You're only superior in your own "tard" world of stupidity.
If someone likes a book, a movie or a series - good for them. Go "rock" your own world.

hanna montana was a big flop overseas

What do people have to say?? no one can tell a good movie unless they see it, which frankly if you dont see a movie then dont comment. thats makes sense. Twilight and new moon are amazing, Summit casted amazing chooses for the series. and I would go see new moon in a heartbeat again.

WOW! Seems to be a fad to trash a popular Vamp series when they actually employ good looking people to act out the roles. I remember all the crap that Ann Rice's Interview got for casting Tom Hanks as Lestat and Brad Pitt at Louis, but they both pulled it off like the class actors that they are. (Yeah I know Queen blowed big time but they didn't even attempt to stick to the novel in the movie version. Leaving out about 90% of the plot, theme, and story).
I am not a little teeny bopper and right now Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series followed by L.A. Banks Vampire Huntress series are my favorite Vamp novels. However my Mom who by the way is in her sixties, college educated with a PHD in pychology no less kept telling me about these teenage vamps, and how I had to read Stephenie Meyers books. I did and the only complaint I have is that she stopped writting them.
As for the Movies of course the kid is gorgeous it's Hollywood duh. And as for Miley if she wasn't an attractive little girl with a semi famous dad she wouldn't be popular either. Does she even read? I guess no matter what the movie or book is someone is always going to hate on it, especially when teenage girls, tweens, and even some women go ga ga over the actors. But fess up be honest with yourself lets all say H-A-T-E-R-S HATERS! Cos thats all it is.

I started reading the Twilight books when I was a sophomore in high school and I liked them then but now it's a completely different story. I went back and re-read the books and I found them to be really cheesy and just straight up terrible. The movies are just as bad, maybe worst I would say. The acting sucks and the actors made the scenes so awkward. The article is right, nothing happens in this story, it was pointless to ever had start the movies.

Personally i feel the franchise is doomed based on my (perhaps misguided) faith in humanity... I know bad movies continue to somehow be made and that the "BLANK Movie" series just wont die... i still believe that people will see past the hype and preteen ferocity and realize that these movies are just very poorly done, from script, acting, directing and just general premise... To be fair i havent watched (read "been able to") all of the first film, and only have the trailers to go by on the second. But when you can tell by the trailers (which usually try and use the best moments to capture appeal) that the movie is trash, it generally is.

One question tho.... You would think a 100 or so old vampire would have graduated high school by now... and dont give me that "he has to go so it's not suspicious" because what kind of quality of life is that? being a highschool senior for 50+ years i think i'd have to stake myself.

Half of the comments on here are based on popular opinion. This article deserves two thumbs up.. We'll see who's right once the last book, "Breaking Dawn" gets made into a movie. Twilight is jus a fad. Just sit back and relax, and wait for TwiTards to open their eyes to SANITY. :)

I think the comments about the author being a hack and wrong are somewhat baseless. Sure he may be wrong about the success of the franchise but ultimately the movies are poorly acted and translate just as poorly from book to film. Anyone who can identify good acting from bad should see that in the Twilight films.

It'll only get worse. Anyone read the books? The last one is a total stinker!!!!!

I don't slam the people who are into the Twilight stuff, everybody has their own thing they are into, but grown adults are into it as well ! I just don't get the hype. Maybe the books translate better than the movies. I went to the first one, and genuinely laughed at scenes that were NOT intended to be funny.
There just isn't teens into it either. One of my wife's 43 year old friends is into it as well. Scary.

oscartracker.blogspot.com for another point of view on flicks.

Ha! Dominic Patten is a hack writer trying to justify his measly existence in a hollywood rag by knocking a popular film to create obvious outrage and gain, ill-gotten, feedback to show his editor, etc. that someone is, actually, reading his tripe. Too funny, Dominic. Get a real job!
Note: Oldest journalist trick in the book to try to justify your existence by outraging an obvious audience on a hot topic so as to give the impression that you've written something worth reading when all you've done is create a knee-jerk reaction in your, all too few readers

I'm 60 years old and I love the books and the movie, and I am eagerly waiting for New Moon. It does exactly what I want my entertainment to do. Get my mind off the daily chaos of my job (I work in a VA). I don't really care whether it's Oscar material or not, or if the "Critics" like it, I do. I think at this point, the frenzy has taken on a life of its own. I will stay out of the theaters and buy the CD, so I can watch it as many times as I want.

This is the dumbest article i have read so far. Are u kidding me? You obviously do not know anything about these books and Weitz did an amazing job. Have you even read the books? If you had then you would obviously realize that hardwicke did not do Twilight justice.

I can tell you why Twilight is doomed in three simple words:

BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD

Think about it - she was in the bad Spiderman movie, the worst movie made by M. Night Shymalawhatever (Lady in the Water Out Back Behind the Garage or whatever that was), and the crappy Terminator movie.

I think somebody put a curse on her.

And now she's in the next Twilight movie. Yep, it's doomed.

Scott Mendelson has it right (RE: Harry Potter, and say, the franchises this lame article fails to mention: Spider-Man, X-men, Batman all made more and more money in recent years). This article is a pointless, albeit successful attempt to generate dissent and draw readers. The logic is extremely flawed, because as Twilight demonstrated, despite being pure garbage, it made 70 M opening and went on for just under 200M domestic. That means solid repeat business folks.
The Twimania is insane and despite critic attempts to douse the fire with bad reviews (or again fangirl attention), this movie IS apparently much better and more competently produced than Twilight was. I expect upwards of $250-300 domestic and plenty more overseas.
Do not underestimate the terrifying power of the rabid fangirl.

Ok i have to admit being a cool male in my early 20's made me discard the first movie due to the fact that its a chick flick and two girls made me watch it over a friends house and the only thing I wanted to watch was their rated R movie of their life at the time which made me have to watch it again after realizing that it was a four part series I cant be biased with chick flicks if im a movie buff. I love long epic series due to the fact that its much more intriguing and you can tell the author had to put a much more serious thought and effort into it ohh and that im tired of short stories.
All right I just finished reading the book New Moon and now i have become a fan. One thing is reading the book and the other is watching hollywood crap made by somebody who's not the author. But the first movie was great. Havent seen the second one yet but im disappointed that they changed the director. WTF
Most of the bad reviews (27% in RotTom WTF)come from oscar award hugging plagarists that dont even read books cause they think theyre so smart with all the jiberish like this joker whos love life is the only thing doomed because hes not classy and new school like the style of the characters and these movies. Ja Lol jelousy babies. I wish hes reading this instead of what Hannah Montana has to say, who by the way is to young and to deep into showbiz to really have a true romantic love life if isnt some fake PR stunt with a jonas brother or some other famous teen idol douchbag.
Ive been deeply in love that ive almost killed myself over a girl and this book and Romeo and Juliet remind me of my love life.
My message is don't go towards the pop BS. Most of the people in the world are sort of brainwashed and were reaching a new decade that id like to see change, especially for our generation X ( Im 25) Id like to see more of an Indie Vibe in the media, Originality and New School. Good artistic rock soundtracks and good artistic cinematography. For me the real artistic stuff is the stuff most people are to brainwashed to visually enjoy. Read the books they're really good thats why they have better rating (4.5 out of five in Amazon.com) Your mind creates the art and emotion not Pop Hollywood. I give all of the Twighlight Saga 4.5 out of five and my moneys definately going for the 8 dollar books and movies. Good job Stephanie Meyer, Hardwicke, and the actors. Bad job to the Rotten Tomatoes, critics, jelous insecure hater jocks, and pop america. Come on guys be more self-confident and enjoy a romantic love live, in other words get a beautiful soul mate and love her like romeo did.

This is a stupid article. You start off by saying the 'Twilight saga is doomed' and follow it up with how New Moon will outperform the first movie...I dont follow your logic

Fanfiction shouldnt be made into movies. Simple.

@Sammy: Are you serio... Forget it. I aint touchin' that.

Fanfiction shouldnt me made into movies. Simple.

@Sammy: Are you seri... forget it. I aint touchin' that.

Good! Always did hate stupid Twilight, and I've never read a single book/fanfic, or seen a movie/remix.

I hate Bella, and I hate the hype. Edward is kinda cool, but he's also a blob.

Woh! Quotig Miley Cyrus' opinion to say this book/movie series have lost the "heartland"? A global phenomenon vs. a local (U.S. + a few overseas fans) teen idol, hmmm... i believe the footprint of Twiligt has set globally is more convincing than one Ms. Cyrus' opinion.
i know our dear nation has become a hateful nation, it's just sad!
not everyone has to agree and should disagree but, not quoting a who-knows-how-long-she'll-last teen idol. weak.

@Birdy

I'm going to have to say I disagree with you. Yes, there are a lot of people who criticize twilight and only "read lowbrow celebrity rag mags, watch violent movies, and barbaric boxing and football." I'm not a person who loves violence. Don't stereotype people. Some of the people who criticize twilight make the assumption that only "stupid 12 year old girls" read twilight but that does not mean you should make assumptions about them. I've read all of the twilight books and I have also seen the movie. The first one was ok, not great, just ok. The movie and the rest of the books were not that great. In my opinion, the books were poorly written with a boring plot. One of my favorite books/series is The Belgaraid by David Eddings. Now THATS a good book. It has violence yes, but it also has a bit of romance and humor too. Thats a book worth reading, not that twilight rubbish.

If the outcome of things is based on what Miley Cyrus thinks we're all screwed...some people like the Twilight series, some don't...as for me, I think it's awesome...y'all can think whatever you want...:)

The object of this movie is to make money and the amount that the movie makes will be the only gauge of whether this type of movie is successful or not.

While I agree with you that the Twilight movies are nothing more than pre-teen eye and mind candy, I do have to disagree with you on the fact that Robert Pattinson is a very talented entertainer. I have listened to some of his music on the first Twilight soundtrack, as well as reveled in his work as Cedric Diggory (sp?) in Harry Potter. He does have the potential to be a great movie star in the same vein as DiCaprio or Heath Ledger, he just has to escape this whole "Twilight" nonsense to get it.

Also, Mark Hamill has a phenomenal career as a voice artist portraying "The Joker" in "Batman: The Animated Series" and the recent blockbuster video "Batman: Arkham Asylum". It was his characterization of the clown prince of crime that gave influence to Ledger's Joker immortalized in "The Dark Knight". Just because an entertainer does not fulfill his or her role as a movie actor does not mean they are just a waste of space in Hollywood.

i love it when it people criticize something else just to feel superior. they bag on twilight fans while they're reading extremely lowbrow celebrity rag mags, watching violent movies, and barbaric boxing and football. give me a love story any day over all that crap. you people insult love stories while praising violence. you guys are backasswards.

Although I agree with most of this, you sound quite snarky. It's not Shakespeare. It's chick-lit. Not even that. It's in the young adult section near the children's section in B&N. Most novels are complete crap, including these ones, but I guess I'm cynical. It's entertainment, not high art, something maybe you and the rest of these people need to read up on. Expecting this to be good is like expecting McDonald's to make you a gourmet meal it's completely childish. I've read all the books a few years ago and I enjoyed the first three and hated the last book. I think the reason this is doomed is because of the fourth book. It doesn't make any sense at all. It's effed up and they would have to change everything. That's why it's "doomed". Let girls enjoy some hot guys. It's always such a sin for girls to get some enjoyment out of looking at some attractive guys. Transformers has Megan Fox, and that's perfectly all right, but when girls swoon over hot guys Americans start to become such puritans.

Anyway, I know it sucks, I just view it as a comedy and I don't take movies seriously anymore. I used to, until I realized it's just pure entertainment and made for money. Nothing else.

Thank you Thank you Thank you for writing this article. I loved all the books and it has upset me so much seeing how much the actors are sensationalized.

This will stop making money when people quit touching themselves to this literary abortion.
I weep for modern literature, holding my copy of Blood Meridian and crying myself to sleep.

That is why Harry Potter is a whole lot more realistic than the Twilight Saga.

If you love a girl, you don't spend most of your time staring at and stalking her.

And one of the best ways to turn off your man is being mean to everyone else around you.

And werewolves standing around half naked just to show off their abs is ridiculous.

Harry Potter understands this. And if any of the above does happen to any Potter character, they face scorn and ridicule.

@eaver

i completely agree with you. i work at a store that sells a lot of twilight and new moon stuff. One day a mom came in returning a shirt that her 12 year old daughter bought. on the back it said "the forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest". the mom was appauled that someone would actually make a shirt that says that and target it at tweens and teens for this damn movie. i agreed with her 100% and told her to make sure that she is here when her daughter buys something again. i dont think that selling pedohilia to kids is really a good idea but, hey this is america and we can do whatever the hell we want i guess. and the reason that harry potter is so successful is that it has a very wide audience as opposed to teenage girls who have to ask their parents to go see twilight in theaters for the 8th time. The fact that they keep changing directors for each movie in the series is also the nail in the coffin. Each director is going to have a different vision on it and its going to get soo lost in translation you wouldnt even be able to tell that this used to have some sort of story line in it. the next movies are going to bomb and i dont think you are going to see any tears shed over it.

twihards are so oblivious
the books are terrible, the movie was complete garbage.
it was probably one of the worst movies i've ever seen. it severely lacked quality and barely made up for it in attractive actors. the only reason these movies are successful is that the teenage crowd have unfortunately been exposed to shitty movies and the fact that people consider these movies to be watchable, is pretty sad. face it, if they had ugly actors playing the leads, it wouldnt be anywhere near as successful.

I don't particularly like vampire or vampire stories. I certainly haven't seen any Twilight films. I assume this franchise is geared towards a younger market. I like to read Nabakov and Raymond Chandler. I am in the grip of 'Farewell My Lovely' at the moment. I am finding it hard boiled and sardonically humorous. I also like to collect wines and I am ever expanding my racks in the basement!
I also like to go on walks, as sometimes my circulation is not the best. I like the peace that it brings me; even more than that of a good chardonnay!
I have seen a movie called Twilight ZONE. Maybe that is part of these movies? There is no vampire but there is a monster. Apparently couple of Asian kids were decapitated by a helicopter during the making of this film which is very sad.

I don't think you have any idea about the fan base for the books and movies...I am afraid you will have to eat your words..this is my generations "Titanic"...and hopefully we will get 4 more of them...we all saw Twilight at least 10 times..

I just have a comment about number 4: Harry Potter may not have made over 975 million since the first film, but every single one of the Harry Potter films is ranked in the Top 25 highest grossing films of all time. The lowest one of those films has made is about 800 million worldwide and that was the 3rd film of the series. It most definitely does NOT belong on that list. If any film series is successful it's Harry effin' Potter. But that said...twilight sucks and we all know it. Those crazy 12 year old girls know it too, but they're probably just tired of the Jonas Brothers and Zac Efron so they've got to scream about something to be satisfied. The only reason the media supports this twi-garbage so much is because they want it to be the American version of Harry Potter...but for goodness sake that will NOT happen. Britain has won that race. They've got Harry Potter, LOTR, Narnia, and His Dark Materials.

Well whether it's doomed or not the move has quite the fan base (mostly girls), i do believe it will be right at the top of the box office, just like the first one at least for a couple of weeks.

I think it is funny that Terminator Salvation is considered a "flop", when it made about the same as Wolverine ($371M WW to $373M WW), which was considered a big enough hit to greenlight a sequel and open the possibility of a Deadpool spin-off. Also, it only made 14 million less than Star Trek ($385M WW), also considered a huge hit, worldwide. (Admittedly it had a larger budget, but who knows how much of that was the baggage of restarting the franchise, buying the license etc. which the other two did not face)

You could also compare it to Taken, also considered a huge hit, and it made nearly $150M more than Taken WW, (though admittedly Taken's budget was $175M less, but the extra BO nearly covers that).

this is also puzzling since T3 was about the same, it had about $150M domestic, as opposed to $125M, and another $300M worldwide, compared to $250M worldwide. T3 was really not a hit in the States, failing to make back its budget, but was obviously considered a big enough money maker to continue the franchise, even without Arnold.

there was a 6-year gap between films, as well as losing its primary star in Arnold. Additionally they basically reset the franchise taking it into the future and faced more expectations as such by trying to map out a period in the Terminator Universe many fans already had their own ideas about thanks to the flashforwards in the original.

So are we saying now that the only money that counts for films is domestic? As far as I know Euros, Yen and Pesos spend just as well as Dollars. I just have a hard time buying that it was a "flop" and did not make them any money. If anything it would seem that doing better overseas would be considered a GOOD thing, since that gives you an even larger market base to pull from, whereas Star Trek made nearly %70 of its money domestic.

I liked T4 and I hope they continue the franchise after all the legal issues are resolved.

Wow...someone actually said this out loud!! BRAVO!!!! All those reasons and more is why this bullcrap will fade very soon. Thank Goodness. I'm so sick of it.

I think the basic point the author of this article was getting at (but didn't quite deliver) was that the "Twilight" craze is just that-- a craze, which by definition, fizz out rather quickly after all the hype has abated and the target audience (re: tweens and teens) either moves on to another hot craze or grows out of it entirely. True fans will stick around, but not in the numbers represented now-- most people are along for the ride as long as it's new and shiny, but will get on a new one once the novelty has worn off.

It's fine being a fan of things-- I love a lot of books/movies/t.v. shows/music that probably a lot of other people are critical of. Some of the criticism of things you like is without merit and done by people trying to validate their own taste by insulting others' (i.e., so-and-so sucks, or that movie sucks, or people who like _____ are losers, nerds, geeks, etc.). But well thought out criticism, no matter how objectionable to a fan, should at least be considered and not outright dismissed. I'm not a hater and I don't want to ruin anyone's fun, but taking a critical look at something is sometimes a good thing because it lets you say, "yeah, it's not perfect, but I still love it." It might also allow your tastes to grow and expand. Instead of saying all vampires suck except Edward, try dipping into the vampire back catalogue and check out other people's takes on the genre. "Nosferatu" (mentioned in this article) is a classic for a reason-- after nearly 100 years the film is still moody, atmospheric and beautiful to look at, plus it's a great intro to silent film (if you haven't seen any of them yet). Check out the different incarnations of Dracula over the decades, "Nosferatu" was the first, but Dracula also popped up several times in each decade, most notably: 1931's "Dracula" with Bela Lugosi; 1958's "Dracula" with Christopher Lee, along with sequels throughout the '60's and '70's with Lee as the Count up to 1973's "Satanic Rites of Dracula"; 1979's "Dracula" with Frank Langella; and 1992's "Bram Stoker's Dracula" with Gary Oldman. Other vampire films and t.v. shows like "The Lost Boys", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" t.v. show, "From Dusk Till Dawn" and many, many others (just Google "good vampire movies") play with the genre and mythology successfully. Meyer didn't create the vampire, werewolf, or teen angst genres-- some will say she's perfected them, others will say she's added her take to them, and still others will say she's ruined them. What's important, though, is that people don't insult others personally for their taste and that people don't go through life invalidating others simply because they do or do not like a book or movie you like.

@Kris

I understand what the appeal of Twilight is. I used to enjoy the series. But then I looked slightly below the surface and saw exactly how DISTURBING it is. "A guy watches a girl sleep without her knowing, and it's okay because he's beautiful!", "Pedophilia is A-OK, as long as he LOVES her!", and "If your love leaves you, you might as well lie down and die."

Thank you for the hope you have given me. I've had this fear that nothing can stop this horrible sparkly monster from making money, but there may be a chance this will go away.

I mean, it will eventually go away as soon as the movies are done, because the movies and story are completely forgettable, but a quicker, sooner death would be better.

Thanks again.

The Twilight moms are resorting to blatant sophistry! No surprise there, I suppose.

I love how defensive the comments are in response to a fairly by-the-numbers run down of sequel math. Sure I may not "get it". But clearly, the explanation for WHY this franchise will fall into the cracks of pop culture history as tantamount to a regretable hair cut and can't be denied by any reasonable person. Shit, I liked Phantom Menace, so yeah. I also saw the books and no-brainer movie for what it was, a masturbatory retread of the same romantic elements inherent to any vampire/ugly-duckling story. Ann Rice being the last successful (read: acknowledged by Adults, not twitter-crazed, media damaged illiterates) author to tap into this well, I figured the whole blood-sucking thing was done long before the current crop of squeel-speak consumers were even self-aware, much less able to make a distinction between love and sex. Its the self-proclaimed "Adults" that are being drawn to this that concern me the most. You all should have memories good enough to remember when this first became played out and was inevitably reduced to a punchline for a joke that walks out of Hot Topic by the dozens every Saturday (as long as the homework's done).

What's that with boys HATING every movie that wasn't made personally for them? So, in the sea of boy blockbusters, girls get one or two per year. Get over it.

Standing in line at the ArcLight. My dad blogged about it.

http://mankabros.com/chairmans-blog/2009/11/standing-in-line-for-the-twi...

As a fan of Twilight, and not a teenager at that, I'll say this. The fans, we, don't care if you don't like it or get it. We're just fine with your opinion because we are aware that you don't get it. We don't expect or need you to get it. The very things that the critics bemoan about the books and movies are the very same things that we like, nay love. The angst, the passion, the melodrama etc. are all things that attracted us in the first place. Go back to watching Phantom Menace (or God-forbid Transformers). I am not a fan of the Star Wars series.. and I could go into many many details why, but I certainly wouldn't use Miley Cyrus as my supporting source. Please... she's probably still bitter with Thom Yorke.

Now I have a midnight screening to get ready for.

The only people who ever seem to say these books are poorly written are those who haven't read them (like this Dominic Patten). Scott Mendelson says above that even Twi-Hards hate the fourth book, but I would strongly disagree. I would not describe myself as a Twihard but I do have a Creative Writing degree and 10 years of teaching screenwriting under my belt. As far as I'm concerned (and I have read these books) the first and fourth are the strongest. But what I like about Full Moon is that it is a shift towards the internal angst that so characterized my own teenaged years. It made not have the perfect structure for a movie, but not all novels do (nor should they). I have faith in Melissa Rosenberg's ability to tweak that.

On that subject, Melissa Rosenberg made it very clear in the first Twilight script that Bella IS an active protagonist. She may be human, but she could have taken the warnings and stayed away from Edward. Instead her curiosity and her decision to find out what's going on - no matter what the cost - leads us into the second act, and her decision to save her mother at the expense of her own life leads to the final action sequence.

I agree that Summit should have kept Catherine Hardwicke on board (nice to see a female director for a change, and if something isn't broken, why fix it?) but I don't much care of the sequels may make less money. I'll watch them not because of Pattinson's star power, but because it's nice to see a girl's story for a change. Flawed, clumsy and book smart, with crap taste in men, Bella is very much like the rest of us and we too rarely see characters like that on the big screen.

First as a fan of Twilight (and an adult) the books are amazing, creative and incredilby well-written especially for a mom who never intended to be a writer. Take away all the screaming teenage fans and get down to the bottom- line: it's about the books. the movies are just extra and if you think Catherine Hardwick did a good job with Twilight then that tells me you have never read the books. the fact that incredilby talented people are joining this movie franchise proves that there's something to it. Don't tell me Thom Yorke wrote a song for the soundtrack for the money, or that Peter Murphy has a role in Eclipse because tennage girls scream over the actors. Johnny Depp who is admired by many people was in A Nightmare on Elm Street and 21 Jumpstreet for God's Sake! He grew as an actor and I look forward to seeing what the actors from Twilight do in the future. Let's see if Miley Cyrus is around as long as Kristen Stewart, and by the way if you have to refer to Miley Cyrus to back up your point then you shouldn't be making that point.
As for the writer of this article, I dare you to put out just one book that does as well as Twilight, let alone four. Those who can't do, criticize.

"Sequel math" works best for films that sell more than about 30M tickets (which would be about $220M today). A good first estimate of how well the Movie B will do is the audience approval X tickets sold for Movie A. Twilight did not come close to those sales, so it is much less predictable. All of the data suggest that audiences disliked the film, but as Twilight was so far below "saturation" for an action/adventure/fantasy, it is possible that rental converts will replace that.

Oh, and to say that Clones sales were "shriveled" is misleading: sure, it was well short of Phantom Menace (and because Phantom Menace was so bad), but it would have made $400M at today's ticket prices.

Who cares? Of course the movie is rubbish; the entire franchise is.

This is a dumb article. Doesn't make any sense, its doomed, but at the beginning you basically concede it will make tons of cash. Doomed in what aspect? If the films resemble the books at least 50% of the time, fans will flock to it, its not about overweight white male nerds, its about fans of the books. Dumb article.

Attack of the Clones made $650 million worldwide on a $115 million budget. And while no Harry Potter film has surpassed part I ($974 million worldwide), each sequel has made $795-$938 million worldwide (with films 4-6 each increasing their gross over the previous entry). And 2 of the 3 Underworld pictures did not cross $100 million worldwide (part 1 made $95 million, part 2 made $113 million, and part 3 made $91 million). You may be right about the Twilight series quick collapse (especially because even the die-hards hate the fourth book), but your examples of sequel math don't equate.

Comments

Check out this link for failed film franchises: Note Disney dropped Narnia, but Narnia has been picked up by another studio.

Scary.

Cyrus' opinion.
i know our dear nation has become a hateful nation, it's just sad!
not everyone has to agree and should disagree but, not quoting a who-knows-how-long-she'll-last teen idol. weak.

@Birdy

@eaver

i completely agree with you. i work at a store that sells a lot of twilight and new moon stuff.

Here check out the new trailer on this site

@Kris
