Chelsea Handler Says She’s Quitting ‘Chelsea Lately’ to Get Away From the Kardashians (Video)

Joel McHale interviewed the outgoing host of “Chelsea Lately” on her show Wednesday night

Chelsea Handler sat in the guest’s seat on her own show on Wednesday night. Joel McHale dropped by “Chelsea Lately,” but it was to interview the host on her way out the door. Handler is leaving E! for Netflix.

When McHale asked her why she was leaving the network, Handler replied, “This was more a move for me to distance myself from the Kardashians. Everyone knows that.”

The comedienne has continuously jabbed her fellow E! stars over the years, making no secret of her true feelings. She couldn’t have been more clear when she started fantasizing about her possible legacy.

“Wouldn’t it be amazing, though, if I did leave and then the whole Kardashian empire just crumbled,” she said. “In some stroke of crazy irony and happenstance, all of a sudden they just fell apart and … then I was a national hero.”

When asked about her initial announcement that she was leaving, Handler said the reaction caught her off guard. Apparently, she’d never bothered to really tell anyone she was’t going to renew her contract, but thought it was common knowledge.

So when she talked candidly about it on Howard Stern’s SirusXM radio show, she didn’t think much of it. But that turned out to be the official announcement for everyone, including her bosses at E!

Handler is moving to Netflix with a new series and several specials. The new series won’t appear until 2016, but fans won’t have to wait long for her debut on the streaming service. Her first of five specials, “Uganda Be Kidding Me,” named after her fifth book, will debut Oct. 10.

Her final episode of “Chelsea Lately” will air August 26, and will feature a live performance by Miley Cyrus.
