Dustin Hoffman is in the final stages of negotiations to direct "Quartet," a movie based on Ronald Harwood's play.

Set in a retirement home for opera singers in the Home Counties of England, "Quartet" will star Maggie Smith, Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay, with filming set to begin later this year, the Daily Mail (U.K.) reports.

Finola Dwyer, who co-produced "An Education," is producing what would be Hoffman's directorial debut.

Harwood, who won an Oscar for Roman Polanski's "The Pianist," is adapting his play for the big screen. He also was Oscar-nominated for adapting his play "The Dresser," which also starred Finney.

BBC Films is backing the project.
