“New Moon” started its overseas run last month as No. 1, and that’s where it shall remain – until “Avatar” comes along next week.
The “Twilight” sequel took an additional $22.3 million at the foreign box office this week, bringing its offshore total to $358.7 million.
“The Princess and the Frog,” which was tops at the domestic box office with $25 million, opened in 10 foreign markets and earned $7 million there, finishing No. 1 in Mexico and Venezuela. It was No. 5 overall in offshore markets.
Clint Eastwood’s “Invictus” opened at 73 screens in South Africa, where it drew $193,000 in ticket sales. Roland Emmerich’s “2012” held strong in foreign markets with another $20 million this weekend, bringing its overseas take to $556 million. The disaster epic now ranks as the 13th-biggest international release of all time.
“Disney’s A Christmas Carol” continued as a strong earner overseas as well, with $14.8 million in 50 markets for a $146.8 million foreign gross.
