Harold Gould, a longtime character actor in films and television, died on Saturday at the Motion Picture and Television Fund retirement community in Woodland Hills, California, after a battle with prostate cancer. He was 86.

Gould was probably best known as Valerie Harper's father on "Rhoda." He also played a con man "Kid Twist" in 1973's "The Sting" with Robert Redford and Paul Newman, and starred as Lindsay Lohan's grandfather in "Freaky Friday."

He also appeared in "Patch Adams," Woody Allen's "Love and Death," and played Betty White's boyfriend on "The Golden Girls."

Gould is survived by his wife, Lea, a son, daughter and five grandchildren.
