“Nightline” has a new executive producer with a familiar face.
ABC News President James Goldston sent a memo to staff on Wednesday morning to announce Roxanna Sherwood’s promotion, effective immediately.
Sherwood — a producer who Goldston hailed for being able to shoot and edit her own segments — has worked at ABC News for 19 years. She was previously a producer on “Nightline” for seven years, beginning in 2005 when the late-night news program relaunched after longtime anchor Ted Koppel retired.
The Columbia graduate, with a Master’s degree in journalism and a Bachelor’s degree in Latin American History, was most recently a senior producer at “20/20.” Sherwood was responsible for overseeing stories and field coordination on major breaking news events including the Newtown school tragedy and the Boston bombings.

“I worked with Roxanna for many years at ‘Nightline,’ and witnessed her great talent producing smart, innovative, and provocative television, and am confident that her vision and leadership will take the broadcast to new heights and build on all of its recent success,” Goldston wrote in the memo.

I am pleased to announce that Roxanna Sherwood has been named the new executive producer of “Nightline,” effective immediately.
I am thrilled that she will be leading the broadcast where she spent seven formative years. A producer when the show re-launched in 2005, Roxanna was instrumental in helping define the new way “Nightline’s” award-winning reports are produced. I worked with Roxanna for many years at “Nightline,” and witnessed her great talent producing smart, innovative, and provocative television, and am confident that her vision and leadership will take the broadcast to new heights and build on all of its recent success.
Whether delving into major investigations, traveling to all corners of the world, or covering big entertainment stories, Roxanna is a superb storyteller. A 19-year veteran of ABC News, Roxanna has worked across the news division–most recently as a senior producer at “20/20,” overseeing concept hours and stories that have contributed greatly to our current success in primetime. She also was responsible for field coordination on major breaking news events including the Newtown school tragedy and the Boston bombings.
Roxanna was part of the first wave of producers trained to shoot, produce, and edit. She showcased her technological skills in 2010 when she shot, edited, and produced a four hour series about the brain that was “Nightline’s” first ever foray into primetime.
While at Nightline she also recognized a troubling trend in cancer care among young adults; investigated bad air quality at ground zero post-9/11; exposed sexual abuse by a rabbi in Brooklyn; and helped spearhead our reporting on concussions in the NFL resulting in permanent brain damage.
In addition, Roxanna is a digitally-savvy and creative producer with a passion for great journalism and a unique eye for impactful stories. She will use all of these skills to great effect at Nightline, infusing the broadcast with engaging, hard-hitting, and innovative reports and extending Nightline’s rise as a storytelling powerhouse across all of our platforms.
Roxanna is a double Columbia graduate, earning a Master’s degree in journalism, and an undergraduate degree in Latin American History. Her awards include several Emmys, Cine Golden Eagles, and a DuPont.
Fluent in Spanish and passionate about Latin America, Roxanna was instrumental in the early days of our ABC-Univision joint venture Fusion.
A yoga-enthusiast, Roxanna can often be seen rollerblading out of the office to spend time with her favorite companion–her adorable five-year-old son, Rio.
Roxanna re-joins the tremendous team at “Nightline” at an exciting time. The program won the 2014 Murrow Award for Hard News and was recently nominated for an astonishing 13 Emmys. The broadcast has lead the way in innovative storytelling and ground-breaking reporting–and I know they are just getting started.
