Martial Arts Bloodbath ‘The Raid 2’ to Open in March

Gareth Evans wrote and directed the sequel to the Indonesian martial arts film

“The Raid 2,” Gareth Evans’ sequel to his cult martial arts hit of a year ago, will open in theaters March 28, 2014, Sony Pictures Classics and Stage 6 Films said Monday.

The film will pick up right where its predecessor let off. Rama (Iko Uwais), an Indonesian cop, goes undercover to infiltrate a criminal organization. Combat, conflict and corruption rule the day.

The first film grossed $4 million in the United States from a budget of less than half that figure. It received sterling reviews after its debut at the Toronto Film Festival, and prompted ScreenGems to develop an English-language remake.

Evans wrote and directed “The Raid 2,” as he did the first one. Merantau Film’s Ario Sagantoro produced the film with Aram Tertzakian and Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films.

The film will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
