Reality TV Hits Rock Bottom – Desperate Times Call for Desperate Gimmicks: Wrap Trends (Video)

TheWrap’s Jordan Burchette examines how NBC’s “The Voice” is finding old reality tropes to infuse fatigue into the competition series

NBC’s “The Voice” returned for Season 9 this month, and the show is still finding brand-old reality tropes to infuse fatigue into the competition series.

After impressing two of the show’s four judges with a blind auditions performance of “Seven Bridges Road,” Jubal Lee Young seized the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend and singing partner Amanda Preslar on stage.

Borrowing a page from the playbooks of “X-Factor,” “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” and just about every other reality series ever, the show leveraged the emotional moment for manufactured surprise.

“What just happened?” asked coach Blake Shelton, as though his earlier question asking if the two were married wasn’t an obvious set-up.

So was the proposal a sweet moment for “The Voice”? Or was it yet another nail in reality TV’s coffin? Watch the latest Wrap Trends for more!
