Rob Lowe has joined the cast of the CBS medical drama “Code Black,” the network announced Tuesday.

Lowe will play Col. Ethan Willis, a doctor in the U.S. Military’s prestigious Combat Casualty Care research program who has been pulled out of a combat hospital in Afghanistan and embedded at Angels Memorial to teach what the military has learned about combat medicine.

His aggressive, rule-breaking style is greeted enthusiastically by Dr. Leanne Rorish, played by Marcia Gay Harden, but not by all the other doctors. The character will be introduced in the show’s Season 2 premiere on Sept. 28.

The role on CBS sees Lowe jumping networks after Fox canceled his sitcom “The Grinder” after just one season last month. He joins Harden, Luis Guzman, Melanie Chandra, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Jillian Murray, Boris Kodjoe and William Allen Young on the medical drama from Michael Seitzman.

As TheWrap previously reported, two former series regulars, Raza Jaffrey and Bonnie Somerville, will not return to “Code Black” for the show’s second season. In addition, Boris Kodjoe will be upped from recurring status.
