Former One Direction star joins Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Lopez for special September run centered on stars of social media

Singer Zayn Malik continues to establish an identity for himself apart from his star-making boy band One Direction.

The 22-year-old appears in a series of covers for Interview magazine’s September issue, structured entirely around social media stars. He’s joined by fellow cover models Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Selena Gomez.

In an expansive featured titled “The Instagang,” each notable name takes their own self-portrait. Malik is lounging shirtless for his shot, showing off chest tattoos and brooding in a way that any fan would find pleasing.

It’s no surprise that Malik would be included in a group of social media influencers. He boasts over 15 million followers on Twitter, and often catches headlines for his antics on the social media platform.

In mid-August, Malik had words with Taylor Swift’s beau Calvin Harris after he seemingly insulted her views on how musicians are compensated.

Harris targeted Malik and defended Swift over a series of tweets, to which Malik responded “you clearly didn’t understand what I just said either … so I suggest you calm your knickers before them dentures fall out.”

When he’s not busy corresponding on Twitter, Malik is presumably back at work in the studio. He signed with RCA Records in July as a solo artist — a move his own former band mates will soon follow as the remaining four members of One Direction are preparing to take a hiatus.
