Stephen Colbert Backs House Democrats’ Gun Control Sit-In (Video)

“Late Show” host rips Republicans for cutting C-SPAN camera feed

Stephen Colbert continued using his “Late Show” platform for political progress Wednesday night, when the liberal comedian lauded Congressional Democrats for staging a sit-in over gun reform.

“They’re fighting for two things 90 percent of Americans are in favor of: Stopping terrorists from getting guns, and sitting down,” Colbert quipped of the ongoing House protest.

The CBS host then lobbed another joke: “Republicans shut off C-SPAN’s cameras, which really upset C-SPAN’s viewer.”

There was plenty more where those came from — watch the video above.

And here are some other recent 11:35 p.m. efforts by Colbert on the same issue:

Led by civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, the Democrats took control of the House floor on Wednesday, demanding a vote on gun control legislation. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan dubbed their actions a “publicity stunt.”

At 10 p.m. ET, Ryan gaveled the chamber to order in an attempt to hold a procedural vote on an unrelated matter. Democrats — some holding signs with the names of victims of gun violence — chanted “no bill, no break” and “shame shame shame,” and sang “We Shall Overcome,” CNN reported.

Prepared to stay throughout the night, lawmakers pulled out pillows and blankets on the House floor, while others brought out snacks or battery packs to keep the livestream going on Periscope.
