The series premiered to strong numbers in July 2013, drawing more than 3 million total viewers. However, the Season 2 premiere of the show, which was based on the Danish series “Bron,” drew half that, with 1.5 million total viewers, according to TV by the Numbers.

The second season aired its final episode Oct. 1.

“We thank our partners at FX for their tireless efforts in developing and launching ‘The Bridge’ with us,” production company Shine America said Tuesday. “From its fresh, unique voice to its deep and diverse ensemble cast, this is a series that we are all very proud of.”

The series starred Bichir and Kruger as detectives from opposite sides of the U.S./Mexico border. While the first season focused on the pursuit of a serial killer, Season 2 broadened its scope, exploring corruption in politics.

“I think ultimately [politics are] harder, but you have more story if you do it correctly. The serial killer, it feels like cheap thrills, and we did a lot of that last year,” executive producer Elwood Reid told TheWrap in July. “There are so many shows that have serial killers, and it’s really hard to top the serial killer shows that are out there.”

While “The Bridge” is history at FX, there may be hope for the series yet — Shine America is exploring possible new homes for the show, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.
