‘The Giver’ Defies Elder Meryl Streep in New Trailer (Video)

The movie is an adaptation of Lois Lowry’s 1993 best-selling young adult novel

“The Giver” may enlighten young star Brenton Thwaites, but wisdom comes with a serious price that three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep hopes to make him pay.

A new trailer (above) for the Weinstein Company summer release shows Thwaites (“Maleficent”) discovering the titular character Jeff Bridges portrays, and then receiving knowledge from the past, including a dark family secret about his parents, played by Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgård.

On the bright side, his eyes start noticing bright new shades called “colors” and he feels emotions for the first time in his life.

But another downer comes when the Chief Elder (Streep) makes him the dystopian community’s public enemy number one.

“The Giver,” director Phillip Noyce‘s adaptation of Lois Lowry’s Newbury Medal-winning novel, hits theaters on Aug. 15.
