Will Ferrell to Battle Doppleganger Chad Smith in ‘Tonight Show’ Drum-Off

On May 22, there will be more cowbell

Will Ferrell may look like the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, but can he drum like him? We’ll find out with a drum-off on Jimmy Fallon‘s “Tonight Show” on May 22.

The actor and rock star have been trading good-natured jabs, with Smith recently telling Rolling Stone: “We’re going to have a drum-off to see who the real Chad Smith is,” Smith told the mag. “I’m all for it. But unless Will’s been practicing or is secretly a crazy, wild drummer, I think it’ll be evident right off the bat who the real Chad Smith is. I’m ready to take him down.”

The whole thing is for charity, and the two have already raised $300,000 for the charities Cancer for College and Little Kids Rock.

Asked to rate Ferrell’s percussion skills, which Ferrell has shown off in the movie “Step Brothers” and the infamous cowbell sketch on “Saturday Night Live,” Smith replied: “Terrible. I hope he’s practicing.”

“I have not been practicing,” Ferrell admitted to Rolling Stone. “There’s no amount of practice that would help me become a good drummer.”

The cowbell may be Ferrell’s only chance.

“I believe they’ll be some cowbell involved,” said Smith. “And that’s what worries me. He might try to win everybody over with his whole cowbell thing. I might have to wrestle and tackle him.”

Either way, Ferrell promised: “It’s going to end in a way that will be extremely surprising to the audience.”
