‘Another Period’ Stars Dish on Kanye-Like Scott Joplin, ‘Branding Expert’ Harriet Tubman (Exclusive Video)

Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome talk to TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell: “We mostly get to do what we want”

As the second season of “Another Period” gets underway on Comedy Central on Wednesday, the show welcomes a slew of guest stars, including Perez Hilton, Adam Pally, Joss Whedon, June Diane Raphael, Lauren Lapkus and Jemaine Clement.

“Basically we just try to get our favorite people,” Natasha Leggero explained to TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell, revealing that Andrew Rannells will also guest star on the period comedy as a love interest of one of the main characters.

Starring and co-created by Leggero and Riki Lindhome, “Another Period” will also host Cedric the Entertainer, who plays Scott Joplin “in like a Kanye manner.”

The comedians describe their show as “the Kardashians living in Downton Abbey.” Set in 1902, the series follows Bellacourt sisters Lillian and Beatrice, whom Leggero describes as “rich, socialite assholes trying to get famous in the Gilded Age.”

The series frequently features fictionalized versions of historical figures, including Season 2’s Albert Einstein, Teddy and Eleanor Roosevelt and “branding expert” Harriet Tubman.

“She was like, ‘White people love trains, so that’s how I knew to call it the Underground Railroad,’” Leggero teased.

Lindhome said the show doesn’t face much resistance from the network, which she said offers a great deal of creative freedom. “We’ve been very lucky, because we mostly get to do what we want,” she said.

Comedy Central’s hands-off approach allows the writers to focus on making the funniest show they can. The writers’ room is made up of “very funny people doing very hard work,” Lindhome said.

“Another Period” Season 2 premieres Wednesday, June 15, at 10/9c on Comedy Central.
