The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has unveiled “longlists” that narrow the field in 24 different categories at the EE British Academy Film Awards. Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up,” Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast,” Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” were among the films that made the cut in a number of different categories.
“Don’t Look Up” and “West Side Story” both received 15 mentions on the longlists to lead all films, followed by “Belfast” and The Power of the Dog” with 14 and “Dune” and “House of Gucci” with 13. Other films that hit double digits included “Licorice Pizza” and “No Time to Die” with 11 and “Last Night in Soho” with 10.
The lists included most of the top contenders this awards season, although “Nightmare Alley,” “Spencer” and “Cyrano” were left off the Best Film longlist.
In past years, the BAFTA longlists and nominations have been a fairly reliable predictor of Oscar success, and that remained true last year even after BAFTA instituted a new system of voting designed to spotlight independent and diverse talents. More than 60% of the BAFTA nominees went on to receive Oscar nominations, and the BAFTA longlists contained almost 90% of the Oscar nominees.
While longlists were used in BAFTA voting prior to 2012, they had been eliminated after that year. They were restored last year, as part of a widespread effort to bring more diversity to the nominations.
Round-one voting, which produced the longlists, was conducted by different chapters or juries with the exception of Best Film, in which all members could vote. Round-two voting to produce the nominees will also be in the hands of chapters or juries that have seen all the longlisted contenders in each category. Final voting in most categories will be open to all BAFTA members.
BAFTA nominations will be announced Feb. 3, with the ceremony taking place March 13.
Here are the BAFTA longlists.
