Audiences in North America will soon have the chance to fall in love with Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “The Beloved,” as Kino Lorber has acquired the father-daughter drama out of Cannes.
The movie starring Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo will get an early 2027 theatrical release, the distribution company announced on Monday. The film is also set to screen at TIFF next month.
“I am absolutely pleased that Kino Lorber — a 100% independent company fully committed to the importance of the theater experience — will be distributing our film in the U.S.,” Sorogoyen said in a statement. “The taste they have demonstrated throughout their career, their discernment and their track record of bringing international auteur cinema to audiences assure us that ‘The Beloved’ is in the best possible hands. It is an agreement I welcome with great enthusiasm.”
“‘The Beloved’ draws you into its world from the very first moments, and it’s immediately clear that you’re in the hands of a master filmmaker,” Kino Lorber Chief Distribution & Revenue Officer Lisa Schwartz added. “Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo deliver tour de force performances as father and daughter, and it’s thrilling to watch these incredibly gifted actors match each other at every turn. Written by Sorogoyen and Isabel Peña, “The Beloved” (“El ser querido”) was a co-production from Movistar Plus Original Film, Caballo Films, El Ser Querido AIE and Le Pacte. Nacho Lavilla and Eduardo Villanueva produced, with executive producers Clara Lago and Bardem.
In his review of the film for TheWrap, Chase Hutchinson described the family drama as the chaotic evil version of “Sentimental Value,” writing: “Where Joachim Trier’s now-Oscar-winning film ultimately feels like it is generally hopeful about the capacity of art and cinema to connect us just as it allows for some key ambiguities to linger, Sorogoyen’s latest increasingly centers on how toxic families, as well as film productions, can be.”
“The Beloved” hits theaters in Spain on Aug. 26.
