‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ Teaser – Violet’s ‘Mysterious Past’ Leads the Crawleys to the South of France (Video)

Sequel film hits theaters March 18

The first teaser trailer for “Downton Abbey: A New Era” has arrived, revealing that the story will center around Violet Crawley’s (Maggie Smith) “mysterious past” and how it will affect the entire family’s present.

“Years ago, before you were born, I met a man,” Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, says to her son Robert, the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), her daughter Lady Rosamund (Samantha Bond) and her granddaughter Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery). “And now I’ve come into the possession of a villa in the South of France.”

“What?” Mary says, speaking for all of us. And once you see Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) checking out a photo of the young Violet, you’re going to be even more intrigued by this chapter of her life “Downton” fans have been wondering about for years.

Before the end of the video — which is packed with glimpses of the upstairs/downstairs drama to come — the Crawleys have headed to the South of France to explore Violet’s recently acquired villa.

“They better be warned: The British are coming,” Carson tells his wife, Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan).
