Fox’s Live ‘Rent’ Gets 2019 Premiere Date

Marc Platt is EP for production of Tony-winning musical

Fox’s live production of the Tony-winning musical “Rent” will air on Sunday, January 27, 2019, the network announced Monday.

“Rent” is a three-hour production and does not currently have a director or cast attached. Fox announced in May that “Rent” was on the way, but there was not yet a planned premiere date at that time.

The project is executive produced by Marc Platt (“Grease: Live,” “La La Land”), Adam Siegel, Julie Larson, Al Larson. Revolution Studios’ Vince Totino, Scott Hemming and Marla Levine are also executive producing.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical from the late writer/composer Jonathan Larson celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Last month, Fox Television Group CEO and co-chairman Dana Walden told reporters that the company was still “genuinely excited” about its version of “Rent” despite the delays.

Live musicals remain trendy despite inherent challenges. ABC’s “Little Mermaid Live” and NBC’s “Bye Bye Birdie” have both seen their launches postponed recently.

“Rent” airs at 7:00 p.m. ET live/PT tape-delayed on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, on Fox.
