‘Hemlock Grove’ Season 2 Cast Talks Character Evolution, Changing Dynamics (Video)

TheWrap chats with returning stars Landon Liboiron and Bill Skarsgard, as well as newcomers Madeline Brewer and Madeleine Martin, about their characters and the new energy in Season 2

With the entire second season of Netflix’s horror series “Hemlock Grove” streaming now, TheWrap sat down with the cast and creators of the hit show to talk about the new 10-episode run.

Landon Liboiron and Bill Skarsgard star as best buds Peter Rumancek and Roman Godfrey, respectively. But Season 1 ended with Liboiron’s character abandoning Skarsgard, effectively dissembling their friendship.

“There’s a lot that they’ve experienced together,” Liboiron said. “They’re both going through their own personal demons, turmoil, and responsibilities [so] they don’t really have time for each other at the beginning of the season.” The loss of his friend leaves Skarsgard’s character alone to struggle with his new curse.

Skarsgard talked about the challenges of bringing authenticity to the supernatural vampire as an actor. “It’s hard to understand bloodthirst. But it’s essentially an addiction like anything else. And that I do understand,” Skarsgard said. “It’s as important for him as eating is for humans.”

But it’s more than just the bloodthirst that’s a challenge. “He’s really battling himself and this new thirst for human blood,” Skarsgard said of Roman. “He hates himself for it because the only way he gets this is [by] hurting people, which he still doesn’t want to do.”

Madeline Brewer and Madeleine Martin are newcomers on the second season of “Hemlock Grove,” though Martin is stepping into a familiar character. She takes over the role of Roman’s deformed sister, Shelley, from Nicole Boivin.

At the end of Season 1, Shelley ran off into the woods after being shot. “It’s definitely a new, evolved Shelley in Season 2,” Martin said. “Because she’s on the run, and on her own, she really comes into her own. She has to fight to survive, in a way that she didn’t when she was at the Godfrey mansion.

Meanwhile, Brewer’s character, Miranda Cates, is new to Hemlock Grove, finding herself stuck there after a car accident. She befriends ex-best friends, Roman and Peter, adding a very interesting new dynamic to the show.

“I feel like people think that she might start a war and a triangle of them fighting over her,” Brewer said. “But really Miranda is there to bring them together to realize the things they need to realize to save the people they need to save.”

Miranda is floating around in the eerie Pennsylvania town for now, but will she stick around? “You want to leave but there’s just something that pulls you back in,” Brewer explained. “I think that’s what happened to Peter; He wanted to leave but then there’s these forces that pull you back in.”
